Federal prosecutors say the men, who live in Ohio, attended a Muslim convention in Cleveland during the summer of 2004 where they talked about training in explosives, guns and sniper tactics. The men were there with a former U.S. military man who worked undercover and helped foil the plot, said Gregg Sofer, a justice department attorney. Defense disputes evidence in anti-terrorism trial in Toledo
Mohammed Amawi, Wassim Mazloum and Marwan El-Hindi are scheduled to stand trial this week at the U.S. District Courthouse in Toledo. They are accused of forming a terror cell there to wage war against American soldiers in Iraq. The men were indicted two years ago in one of the largest terrorism cases originating in Ohio. The charges were announced by then-Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, who asserted the men met, trained, recruited others and collected money in northwest Ohio with the goal of supporting the insurgency against U.S. soldiers in Iraq .(Plain Dealer, 4 Mar 08)
Mayor Carty Finkbeiner will get them released. He’s the one who booted the marines out of town.
