Religious and cultural traditions collide in odd ways.
Is it right to tell election poll workers, assigned to Mormon church meeting houses, to not bring coffee, sodas or anything else caffeinated to refresh themselves during their long day tending to voters?
-SNIP-
First, lets look at the polling place duties and sipping Maxwell House in the meeting house.
Longtime Tempe poll worker Mary Ann Hemmingson has signed up to work the polls for the March 11 election. Shell spend her 14- or 15-hour day in a church, but no longer one that belongs to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
I never sign up to work at a Mormon church because the board workers there are not allowed to have any caffeine on the premises, she said. That means no coffee in the morning and no Diet Coke in the afternoon. ... You dont want to see what I look like without my daily dose of caffeine. Its not a pretty picture.
The Word of Wisdom portion of the Doctrine and Covenants, put forth in 1833 by church founder and prophet Joseph Smith, says that hot drinks are not for the body or belly. Add to that what H. Burke Peterson, first counselor in the Presiding Bishopric, said in 1975: We know that cola drinks contain the drug caffeine. We know caffeine is not wholesome nor prudent for the use of our bodies. It is only sound judgment to conclude that cola drinks and any others that contain caffeine or other harmful ingredients should not be used.
Advising followers to restrict what they take into their bodies is one thing, but applying that mandate to those people who perform a public job inside their buildings in a one-day stint seems to be taking things too Far.

Mitt Romney was the keynote speaker at a Chamber of Commerce Breakfast in my city and there was plenty of Joe.
Romney is not a serious adherant of his faith, but he had to pretend to be or risk being labelled as a hypocrite; which is is anyway.
****
Romney does not drink coffee I am sure on his campaign they had a coffee machine.
I eat in coffee shops, restaurants, supper clubs, where ever I go many places serve drinks, coffee etc.
So I don’t follow your reasoning!
So many mainstream feel offended when the LDS get snippy or do name calling which we really try to a void.
Yet post after post many here choose to go out of their way to be rude and insulting about, or to the LDS, and many of you feel if the LDS react that was uncalled for or not nice or many other types of mocking or parodies.
Polite behavior is a two way street
noun 1. a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess, esp. a person whose actions belie stated beliefs.
2. a person who feigns some desirable or publicly approved attitude, esp. one whose private life, opinions, or statements belie his or her public statements.
Jesus also taught “The Lord’s Prayer” which says.
“Our Father which are in Heaven,
Thy Kingdom come,
“Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.
will, work are synonyms.
______________________________
No they are not synonyms...
will as in Thy will (Matthew 6:10) is thelaymah in the Greek .. a determination, choice, inclination, desire, pleasure....
works as in Ephesians 2:9 is ergon in the Greek...to work, toil, (as an effort or occupation) an act, deed, doing, labor..
Nope..not the same ...
Resty, you need to do your own reading of the Bible and study God’s Word for yourself...
mormon talking points are not profitable...
Romney does not drink coffee

Resty, you dont know what Romney does...
or does not do...
Get much snow ???

TN if Mitt drank coffee that would have been headlines!LOL
identify synonyms for a common adjective
To do thy will is a verb and is a choice to do the work or the Lord’s will be following through.
Laboring in the Lord’s vineyard!
To prepare or to receive or to bring about the Lord’s Kingdom here on earth.
if Mitt drank coffee that would have been headlines!

No, it wouldnt
It aint that big of a deal...

No, Resty, in Matthew 6:10, Jesus said “Thy will (thelaymah) be done” meaning God’s choice, inclination, desire, pleasure....whatever God determines He wants ...
The “works” that mormons think they have to do to be saved are (ergon) to work, toil, (as an effort or occupation) an act, deed, doing, labor..Ephesians 2:9
Correct, 'nuff said.
Poll place workers cannot leave the building at all during the entire voting hours. So bringing it (or brown bagging it) won’t work. They have to stay there.
It’s not about the voters, it’s about the people working there. Most people putting in a 12+ hour day might like to have a cup of hot coffee in the morning, or have a soda or iced tea with lunch. Since the voting will probably take place in a fellowship or community hall and not in the sanctuary itself, why can’t they have a soda with their lunch? They can’t leave the entire time they’re there, not even to go out to their car. By offering the hall as a polling place, they are opening it up to the public. This isn’t a private function.
No they can’t.
Perhaps all the local Mormons should work the polls there that day.
They don’t allow the workers to eat or drink for 12, 14, 16 hour shifts???? Are you serious?
TN I was mainstream before and it is the Bible that lead me to look for the rest of it!
No, Resty, in Matthew 6:10, Jesus said Thy will (thelaymah) be done meaning Gods choice, inclination, desire, pleasure....whatever God determines He wants ...

you are addressing this from you background of what you think the LDS have to do.
LDS don’t have to do anything if choose not too!
And that will be there reward !
All received resurrection, at the level of each participation will detrement where one will reside!
Some receive the resurrection of life and for some receive resurrection unto damnation
John 5: 29
29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
Is it too much to expect courtesty from you folks who want to converse with the LDS and cap proper names?
I don’t care if you think the Book is a novel, even in novels when discussing characters decent folks always cap the proper names.
Aint NOTHIN Mormon that belongs to Jesus!
Attitude like this makes it impossible to have a civil conversation.

17 It no sooner appeared than I found myself delivered from the enemy which held me bound. When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the otherThis is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!
18 My object in going to inquire of the Lord was to know which of all the sects was right, that I might know which to join. No sooner, therefore, did I get possession of myself, so as to be able to speak, than I asked the Personages who stood above me in the light, which of all the sects was right (for at this time it had never entered into my heart that all were wrong)and which I should join.
19 I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that: they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof.
20 He again forbade me to join with any of them; and many other things did he say unto me, which I cannot write at this time. When I came to myself again, I found myself lying on my back, looking up into heaven. When the light had departed, I had no strength; but soon recovering in some degree, I went home. And as I leaned up to the fireplace, mother inquired what the matter was. I replied, Never mind, all is wellI am well enough off. I then said to my mother, I have learned for myself that Presbyterianism is not true.
