Partisan Trends - Party ID: Dem 41.5% GOP 31.8%
Rasmussen Reports ^ | March 02, 2008 | Scott Rasmussen

Posted on 03/02/2008 4:31:52 PM PST by logician2u

In February, the number of Americans who consider themselves to be Democrats jumped to 41.5%, the highest total on record. Just 31.8% consider themselves to be Republicans. The partisan gap—a 9.7 percentage point advantage for the Democrats—is by far the largest it has ever been. The previous high was a 6.9 point edge for the Democrats in December 2006. Rasmussen Reports tracks this information based upon telephone interviews with approximately 15,000 adults per month and has been doing so since November 2002.

The 9.7 percentage point advantage for Democrats is up from a 5.6 point advantage a month ago and a 2.1 point advantage two months ago. The surge for the Democrats is especially notable because it reversed a modest trend in the GOP direction that unfolded over much of calendar year 2007 (see history from January 2004 to present).

The gains for the Democrats were especially strong among women. In February, 46% of women considered themselves to be Democrats, up from 40% in December. The number of women identifying themselves as Republicans fell from 33% to 29% during that same time frame.

Among men, 36% were Republicans in December and 35% said the same in February. The number of men who are Democrats increased from 33% in December to 36% in February.

I will wait to see another poll before I hit the panic button.

The Dems have always had a lead in party ID.

That said, it is very frustrating to see these numbers.

The GOP did this to themselves. Unfortunately, abandoning the GOP for the Jackass Party is like jumping from the frying pan to the fire.

The legacy of eight years of “compassionate conservatism”.

This just confirms that we are well on our way to a full socialist government. The dems are the party of big government and it seems that more and more people are being convinced that government is the answer to their problems, and who doesn’t have problems. So the beat goes on...

If people have a choice between a Democrat and a Democrat they’ll vote for the Democrat.

It looks like Dick Morris is correct about Hilde bringing women into the fray this fall, that accounts for the largest part of the “growth”.

That said, our current GOP leadership is not exactly firebrands of either Fiscal or Social Conservatism, that doesn’t help at all.

If I remember the numbers from a couple months ago, things were trending back in our direction on this type of poll with Rasmussan. It would seem the interest in Obama and (maybe) Clinton during these primaries have increased those identifying themselves as Dems. I would expect this will subside some as the petals fall off the Obama rose, and the thorns become visible. Between the two in the race, there are no issues being debated because they both share the same views on almost every issues.

Agreed. We are going to have some time to think about how we got here, and how we can get back to our basic principles.

This isn't surprising at all. Most of us have a strong aversion to war - but even more so for women. And the fact that the war in Iraq has gone on for so long just makes it worse. They just want our sons to come home.

A few months ago, the morning radio guy cited some survey claiming 50% Democrat ID. Wouldn’t it vary greatly depending on who conducted the survey?

William Buckley's passing rings a sad note in this context.

The era of Buckley, Russell Kirk, Wilmoore Kendall and their colleagues has been replaced by the era of Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter and Michael Savage, and I for one feel the loss.
