Chavez troops at Colombian border (Hugo might be going too far this time...)
Press Association ^ | 3/2/08

President Hugo Chavez ordered Venezuela's embassy in Colombia closed and sent thousands of troops to the countries' border after Colombia's military killed a top rebel leader.

The leftist leader warned that Colombia's slaying of rebel commander Raul Reyes could spark a war in South America, sending relations between the nations to their lowest point in Mr Chavez's nine-year presidency.

Speaking on his weekly TV and radio programme, Mr Chavez told his defence minister: "move 10 battalions to the border with Colombia for me, immediately". He ordered the Venezuelan Embassy in Bogota closed and said all embassy personnel would be withdrawn.

Chavez is taking the death of a FARC commander very personally.

Of course, Chavez is FARC’s secure supply line. He allows them to keep their “high value” hostages in Venezuela. He provides them with weapons, lets their leaders use Venezuelan passports, they have launched attacks from the Venezuelan side of the border, he has provided air support for FARC attacks. FARC people travel with him, share the stage with him at military ceremonies. For anyone paying attention, Chavez has been at war with Colombia since he took office in the late nineties.

We’ve spent about 9 Billion on equipment, training and other things over the last few years. We’ve got numerous spec ops trainers in country.
I don’t know how good Venezuela is and who’s helped them over the past few years.
I suspect that our military has all this information and they have plans laying around for this contingency.
I believe this would be a slam dunk on the order of a Panama on steroids.

In a war with mad Hugo I expect the US would provide support for Columbia.

Sorry but I have to disagree.

Venezuela wouldn’t make a pimple on Colombia's butt when it comes to a decent military power.

The only way Hugo can stay in power is to declare war then suspend the constitution making himself the next Fidel Castro.

About as well as a grizzly bear cub stacks up against a coyote.

(I wouldn't put my money on the coyote.)

We’ve been training the Columbian military and supplying them for years.
Also on little OLD A-10 squadron on loan would make short work of all the tanks the vennies can muster.
I don’t think the vennies have much heart for the fight behind hugos bluster.

The military will revolt if he tries to do that. Many of the Generals do not support him very strongly. It was the Generals who told him he could not ‘steal’ the last election, they said if the people took to the streets, the troops would be ordered to stay in their barracks. I think much the same will happen here. I think Hugo is making noise to raise the price of oil more.

He and AmmaNutjob seem to be working in concert to raise tensions in the world. With oil at $103 bbl they still have very restless citizens in their home countries. Many Iranians actually FROZE to death this winter in small villages in the north of Iran because the gov’t could not supply enough nat gas and other fuel. Hugo is busy threatening to nationalize his dairy and farm industries because his poor can’t get basic foodstuffs from the local grocery, the shelves are bare.

Despots often look to pick a fight when times are tough at home. They want to stoke the nationalistic frenzy and make the citizens forget the poor straights they are in,.

Here's what Dr. Jack Wheeler said back on 2/8/08:

"Close to home is a third war on the horizon, between Venezuela and Colombia.

Chavez's rule and the Venezuelan economy are disintegrating. The time honored solution of dictators when they are in trouble is war with a foreign devil. There is no way he can coax his favorite devil into war with him - America, whom he revels in taunting and insulting. To his bottomless frustration, all he gets from us is a smirk and a shrug.

So he picks a proxy, our ally of Colombia run by a successful popular pro-US president, Alvaro Uribe. Chavez has tried to damage Uribe by supporting the narco-communist guerrillas of FARC, which at one time ruled an area within Colombia the size of Switzerland.

Thanks to Uribe, FARC is now on the ropes, and the Colombian people have shrugged off their fear of FARC. This Monday (2/4), millions of Colombians all over the country demonstrated against FARC and its atrocities against them. Chavez condemned the demos as a "march of hate and racism."

Chavez has spent billions on Russian weapons from Soviet MiG fighters to hundreds of thousands of AK-47 Kalashnikovs. With FARC failing and the US refusing his bait, he is going to create some excuse for invading Colombia. He can't wait until some Dem weenie is in the White House a year from now. Which means we'll be sending the Marines into Colombia to kick Chavez's commie butt at Uribe's urgent request.

Pray that Cheney can convince Bush to have them chase Chavez all the way to Caracas and rid Venezuela of his pestilence. There would be a ticker-tape rose petal parade for the Marines in downtown Caracas if they did."
