I thought I would once again share with the FR community some really great PICS of the US Navy, this time for 2008.
The site uses thumbnails to link to medium-res pictures suitable for desktop background pics.
Just click on one of the thumbnails below to take you to the site.
Enjoy!
Thanks. Hope you enjoy them. They (the larger ones you get when clicking the thunbnails) make excellent desktop images and screensavers. The 2007 pics are nice too.
Jeff, could you provide a little info on each pic - like name of ship, weapon system, what ship’s job is - that kind of thing.
I’m an old Tin Can Sailor who would like to learn more about our modern fleet.

The signal flag is Hotel, which indicates a pilot is onboard.
Doesn't the flag above the signal flag mean it's Canadian?
I know submariners wouldn't have anything to say about it but I imagine stealth is not at all their forte.
No, it is the “code” or “answer” pennant. It means “Flag that follows is from the International Code of Signals.” In this case it is the “hotel” flag indicating that a pilot is on board. Which makes sense when you look at the tugs alongside and the crew manning the rails. They are entering or leaving port.
Great pics!
My Dad wore that dark blue jacket but I went for the lighter blue.
Thanks for the ping!
What? No French weapons? I guess USN is behind the curve. We need to be more like the Air Force and go buy some Eurofighters, I guess.
That’s the one....betcha don’t wanna be on that deck when the guns go off....it’d kill you if you were in the wrong spot...
My cousin was a Submariner too. I’d go nuts in a sub.
See my links in post 58 on this thread. They provide all sorts of technical data on various ship classes. That PIC site has a brief explanation, but is not meant to get weighed down with all the technical data. The AEGIS vessel Site and the World Wide Aircraft Carrier Site are two good ones to start.
We learned that a couple of years ago when doing exercises with Sweden. Their modern AIP Diesel/electrics embarassed us a couple of times (of course, within the parameters of the ROEs...whatever they were). But, the concern was high enough with the top brass that a Swedish sub and crew were leased out to the US NAvy for a year or more so we could develop methodologies for locating and sinking the things.
>:-} Not a pleasant experience! >:-}
I’ve had the chance now to tour his boat a couple of times. Lots more room in the newer nucs. Of course, being confined in those spaces for weeks and weeks on end is going to get to you sooner or later...but it is certainly much better than it used to be.
You are welcome AG! Hope all is well with you and yours!
Outstanding! and please thank your nephew for his service to our Republic from me and moy family!
Sorry to be late on this...but I see down thread where you guys have discussed this and answered it completely. That’s a great thing about FR...so many knowle=dgable people! Can learn a lot of new things any day of the week.
I toured a WWII sub in Mobile that is part of Battleship Park where the USS Alabama is docked and all I can say is,
“We owe more to the brave souls that manned those tiny cans than we can ever pay”.
God Bless our Veterans of all ages.
