I watched FoxNews -- they showed the ship was Christened. How appropriate to use the steel from 9-11 to build a ship to be used to defend us and go after the terrorists.
NEVER FORGET.

Longer article with more detail:
USS New York To Be Christened At Northrop Grumman
"Cmdr. Curtis Jones will captain the vessel once it's sent out to sea.
Cmdr. Jones happens to be from New York. So he realizes what the USS New York and 9/11 mean to his city, and to the country. "It's always an honor to get command of a ship. But to get command of this ship, being from New York, it's an honor beyond pale, and extremely difficult to put into words," he said. "

Isaiah 2: "......they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks;....", but, in the meantime since there are nations who wish to make war against us and kill our people, we're going to have to take some of those plows and hooks and turn them into the USS New York.

A new U.S. Navy ship to be christened Saturday was built partly using steel from the 9/11 ruins of the World Trade Center. The company says on its Web site that the bow-stem of the ship, the seventh to be named "New York," includes 7.5 tons of steel from the World Trade Center.

My problem is that we are naming an amphibious ship after a state. State names should be reserved for cruisers or capital ships.

From the FOX news article at the link:
The USS New York, an amphibious transport dock ship, is 684 feet long, can top 24 mph, and holds a crew of 360 sailors and three Marines. It is expected to be based in Norfolk, Va.
THREE Marines????????? What kind of Amphib only holds THREE Marines? As an old 'gator sailor, I know the Marines are GOOD, but building a 684' ship and staffing it with a crew of 360 sailors seems to me a bit excessive for THREE Marines .... LOL
