He was just making his own castor oil and drank the wrong part. Perfectly understandable mistake — it happens all the time.

Gooood question. Over at LGF, someone on the comments boards was saying that the article says a dog and other small "pets" were found in the room, so it couldn't be a Muslim because they hate dogs.

However, my reading of this section indicates the dog was dead. Now, it could have starved because of being alone for so long (although methinks a dog would start making noise at some point); or, the dog was a "test subject". I'm the cynical sort, so I'm going with "test subject".
