Will the "Willie Effect" Impact the Election?
Some speculate the controversy could cost McCain the White House

( Cincinnati ) -- Some reports claim the on-going controversy involving 700 WLW talk show host Bill Cunningham (Willie Cunningham) and presidential candidate John McCain has the potential to impact the results of the 2008 election.
Ohio is a key state in the presidential election. For Republicans it is essential that they win as much support as possible in southwest Ohio to counter the strong Democratic party support in the Cleveland area.
Political Science professor Jason Johnson from Hiram College spoke to the Cincinnati Enquirer and told them John McCain needs radio talk show listeners and Willie fans to go his way, "John McCain needs those people if he has any hope of winning in November."
With other national talk show hosts like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity rushing to Willie's defense, it widens the rift between the party's conservative base and John McCain even further, at a time when the Republican party has only recently started to solidify around the likely nominee.
The message was “conservatives, shut up, crawl into a hole, and don’t come out until November when you vote for me.”
It was not the talk show guys that failed. The Bhutto asasination was what fueled McCain’s rise in the polls. Unless you think they engineered it, they did not fail. McCain still has not gotten a descent % of conservative votes. Some pubbies, some moderates and some democrats like McCain as well as a carefully engineered primary system that favors RINOS, independent moderates and Demo crossovers. This is why we have McLame.
What comments of his did you find “out of line?”
All McCain did was say that he wanted a respectful campaign and didn't like Cunningham's comments and Cunningham has a temper tantrum.
Like a person earlier said. this will probably help McCain since it shows that he doesn't pander to hubristic talk radio loudmouths.
NO he didn't. He did EXACTLY what McCain's set-up people asked him to do.
In fact, there is no doubt among organizers there at the time who witnessed McCain's people giving Cunningham his mission. They say that Cunningham is accurately reporting what McCain's people told him to do, and that he was dissed by McCain for doing that. These people are on record agreeing with Cunningham about what McCain asked him to do.
See #45.
Also, you didn’t explain Cunningham’s crime????
Correction:
McCain has zero chance in the election against Obamessiah, and about a 20% chance against Missus Clinton.
Precisely, GBA.
BTTT
He is also insulting and assuming that Conservatives are bigots, so he is trying to protect himself from the smears of the MSM, by distancing himself.
Instead of defending us, he sides against us in a lie about racism, bigotry, homophobia, sexism, and other leftwing smears.
And he will do it as President too. Fortunately for his political career, he has enough liberal voters locked up that he can win. He does not need Conservatives at all.
So, its rational to assume that rational conservatives will not loose sleep over not voting for him, lol. And will just vote down ticket. No big deal for McCain.
Pretty stupid to pick a fight with the guy who controls the microphone. Especially when it won't win him any points to his left anyway.
Keep dreaming, LWalk18! You’re making assumptions about people with strongly held beliefs, who pattern their lives after their beliefs—not voting for “the lesser of two evils” which they’ve been burned doing with Bush.
Conservatives won’t be voting for McNasty unless he makes promises that cut against his grain—on Amnesty, especially. Just consider your man “toast” as Obama will grab enough Independent votes away from McLame to win.
OK, no problem, let's take your hypothetical that McCain loses 100,000 votes, he may gain 200,000 from the 98% who doesn't regulary listen to Cunningham religiously, and also took away a talking point from obama that McCain panders to talk radio, in which 90% of the American population doesn't listen to regulary.
That about somes it up...Cut off nose, spite face
beejaa
YOU may have been “honoring” Gerald Ford, one of the worst presidents in the 20th Century, but conservatives were certainly not!
By the way, what does torture by the North Vietnamese have to do with anything Cunningham said?
“Cunninham’s comments — the ones that started this piddlefest — were out of line. If he can’t watch his mouth; and if he can’t take his medicine like a man; then he should be thrown under the bus.”
And all the dismissal of Cunningham’s actions, and the rancor directed at McCain does not change any of the facts, starting with fact 1.
Fact 1: A quality conservative candidate failed to rise to the occasion in 2008. If people want to stay home and not vote because they do not like the choice between McCain and Obama, do so and we will all ride into total obscurity and probably sit on the margins of Obama’s socialized state.

His behaviour is puzzling at best.
Who is the racist shithead you refer to unless it is Cunningham. There is nothing in his comments about B. Hussein Obama that were racist.
Do you want McCain to apologize to this talk radio guy?
