McCain Retools Immigration Stance
Associated Press ^ | February 27, 2008 | JULIE HIRSCHFELD DAVIS

WASHINGTON (AP) — John McCain faces a dilemma on immigration as he works to persuade conservatives he's tough enough on the issue without erasing his historic appeal to Hispanic voters.

Once a crusader for offering the nation's roughly 12 million undocumented immigrants a way to get legal status, McCain now says his first priority is fortifying U.S. borders.

The metamorphosis reflects McCain's intensifying effort to consolidate his support among conservatives, who deride the Arizona senator's past proposals on immigration as offering amnesty to lawbreakers, and bitterly resent his work with Democrats, including Sen. Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts, on the issue.

(snip)

Listen to McCain's speeches or look on his campaign web site now, and there's little mention of the fight to give illegal immigrants a way to stay in the U.S. lawfully. He instead emphasizes border security — the catch phrase of conservatives who scorned his earlier proposals.

It's a difference of emphasis, not a change in stance, Republican strategists say.

"He's in an excellent place with conservatives who are concerned about immigration, because his position — that he'll secure the border first and have that security certified by the border-state governors, and then we'll go back and deal with the 12 million — seems to have satisfied most people," said Charlie Black, a McCain adviser.

"He says, 'Look, we got the message — the American people do not trust us when we say we'll secure the border,'" Black added.

We need a “Million Minuteman March” in Washington this summer. McCain and the RNC need to stand and look across a large crowd that have gathered in protest one of McCain’s pet issues.

If he wants any credibility on the issue, the first thing he needs to do is stop using the “12 million” figure. PLEASE!

I don’t want a show. I want the law enforced, ALL OF IT! As if that actually means anything to anyone anymore.

If Charlie Black thinks McCain is in a “excellent place with conservatives” then I can only conclude that Charlie Black is mentally handicapped.

Yeah, J. McCain has lied too often. And he did vote against barring gang members and terrorists from entry into US. Was he maybe afraid his and Cindy’s drug supply would be cut off, was he blackmailed to vote this way, or is there more to him than we are aware of?

Metamorphosis?

there's little mention of the fight to give illegal immigrants a way to stay in the U.S. lawfully. He instead emphasizes border security

He's just saying he'll distract us with his border defense diddling while jetting after amnesty assisted by afterburners.

The Senator should understand that we all have sixteen years experience with the preeminent flimflam man in our history, the Grand Wallah of Isflam Bill Clinton, intern be upon him.

We're experts. Nice try, though.

No I haven’t seen him, anytime anyone from McCain’s camp is on the radio or t.v. I switch over to cartoons. That way at least I learn something and don’t completely waste my time.

I don’t trust certification by border state governors, either.

Aww... come on. Schwarzenegger, Richardson, Perry, and Napolitano?

I've often wondered if he isn't referring to the "border state governors" as those from Mexico.

Check out the new website for our "legislators" : http://www.borderlegislators.org

He's from Arizona and helped draft the defeated comprehensive immigration reform. He now hires Juan Hernandez? What are we supposed to think?

McCain will blame anyone but himself if the Border is not secured. Then, he will reintroduce his Comprehensive Immigration Reform package, and we'll fight him like we had to fight George Bush.

We're being asked to vote for a Republican President who we are going to do battle with...AGAIN?

I'm so weary..

Are you not concerned that both of the illegal immigrants in Minnesota might come gunning for you after posting that?
