REDWOOD CITY -- A San Mateo mother who lied about being sexually assaulted at gunpoint by a group of men after her car supposedly broke down in Foster City was sentenced today to 90 days in jail for filing a false police report.
Karyn Galila, 24, sobbed in a Redwood City courtroom as Commissioner Kathleen McKenna ordered her taken into custody immediately. Galila was handcuffed as her husband looked on. He tried to hug her before she was led away, but was ordered by a bailiff not to touch her.
"This was such a detailed, fabricated story," said McKenna, the San Mateo County Superior Court magistrate who handled sentencing. "This kind of conduct does warrant a jail sentence."
Galila was arrested after initially telling police she had been sexually assaulted the night of June 12 when her Jeep sport utility vehicle broke down on Foster City Boulevard. She admitted she had lied to authorities when she said a group of as many as five men had pushed the Jeep onto a nearby street, then assaulted her at gunpoint.
Forensic evidence collected from Galila's SUV led investigators to Robert Salapuddin, 25, of San Mateo, whom they arrested on unrelated outstanding warrants for felony forgery and misdemeanor embezzlement, police said.
Police described Salapuddin as an acquaintance of Galila's who had met with her at a local restaurant earlier that evening. They initially focused on him as a possible participant in the alleged assault, but he was able to produce a receipt from the restaurant and a witness there who identified him, authorities said.
As Galila's story continued to unravel, she admitted she had made up the assault. She pleaded no contest Dec. 31 to one misdemeanor count of filing a false police report.

Wow... sanity actually abounds in the Bay Area!
People should always serve the minimum sentence that would have resulted if an innocent person was convicted of their false accusation.
Wow, that's pretty stiff. I expect she would have gotten less time if she had sexually assaulted someone rather than lying about it happening to her.
She was only lying about sex.
Minimum? I say they should serve 3X the maximum.
You forgot the sarcasm tag. 3 months isn’t pretty stiff. She should have gotten three years.
"The judges shall investigate thoroughly, and if the witness is a false witness and he has accused his brother falsely, then you shall do to him just as he had intended to do to his brother. Thus you shall purge the evil from among you." - Deuteronomy 19:18-19
"Uhhh, look, bud ... you need to, y'know ... go home n' think about what has just happened to y ... I mean .. here."
This is left coast, probably will be required to serve at least three days.
It would seem the woman had an arranged meeting with her boyfriend, stayed to long and came up with this to cover. But her husband was in court with her. Kook alert!
Did the guy with whom she had dinner spurn her, and she was looking to get back at him? Or did she have a thang with Robert, then get worried afterwards that her husband would find out, so she tried to make herself out to be a victim, rather than a willing participant?
that’s a damn good idea
So, why is she described as a “San Mateo mom” in the headline. The article has no information about her children and it does not appear that the false report in question had anything to do with her children. Her status as a mother is irrelevant to the story.
My sister was a Detective who handled sex crimes for her Police Dept. They once had a 16 yr. old girl who accused a young man of raping her. The young man swore that he didn't rape her, but he was 18, and could have gone to jail for quite a long time, if it had been true.
Turns out, she was quite the willing partner, but her parents had found out she'd slept with the guy, and, thinking she'd get in less trouble, she accused him of rape. My sister didn't believe her story from the start, and didn't want to see the young man's life ruined because of his stupid girlfriend. The girl was 'convinced' to drop the charge, after my sister threatened to bring the hammer down on her.
I suspect it is the latter. Robert Salapuddin was identified through “forensic evidence” collected from her vehicle. One wonders what that could have been, eh? She, apparently, did not identify him by name, but was rather reporting that she had been assaulted by random strangers.
and the Durham dirt bag still walks free.
A “damn good idea” that’s about 3000 years old...
Gotta love it.
