Team Clinton: Down, and Out of Touch
Washington Post ^ | February 26, 2008 | Dana Milbank

They are in the last throes, if you will.

As Vice President Cheney knows, such predictions can be perilous. Still, there was no mistaking a certain flailing, a lashing-out, as two Clinton advisers sat down for a bacon-and-eggs session yesterday at the St. Regis Hotel.

The Christian Science Monitor had assembled the ¿minences grises of the Washington press corps -- among them David Broder of The Post, Maureen Dowd of the New York Times and columnist Mark Shields -- for what turned out to be a fascinating tour of an alternate universe.

First came Harold Ickes, who gave a presentation about Hillary Rodham Clinton's prospects that severed all ties with reality. "We're on the way to locking this nomination down," he said of a candidate who appears, if anything, headed in the other direction.

But before the breakfast crowd had a chance to digest that, they were served another, stranger course by Clinton campaign spokesman Phil Singer. Asked about an accusation on the Drudge Report that Clinton staffers had circulated a photo of Barack Obama wearing Somali tribal dress, Singer let 'er rip.

"I find it interesting that in a room of such esteemed journalists that Mr. Drudge has become your respected assignment editor," he lectured. "I find it to be a reflection of one of the problems that's gone on with the overall coverage of this campaign." He went on to chide the journalists for their "woefully inadequate" coverage of Obama, "a point that has been certainly backed up by the 'Saturday Night Live' skit that opened the show this past Saturday evening, which I would refer you all to."

Simply amazing. “If you elect me...”

They are so rattled. I hope that clip gets played on every talk show today.

Yesterday’s favorite soundbite was Hillary mocking an Obama speech. Not ‘presidential’ at all!

I love the cosmic justice of the fake Clintons being out-faked by Obama. They are angrily yelling, "Wait a minute! That's OUR scam!"

There's always a younger, prettier new starlet in Hollywood and a smoother, new grifter, like Obama, in politics.

I’m waiting for the inevitable ‘insider’ book detailing the last days of the Clinton campaign, it will read something like “The Bunker”

Der Fuehrer married his mistress in the bunker.

What will Der Fuehrette do?

Down the years there will be a movie made. I wonder who will play the part of Eva Braun, er, Huma?

Ellen drops in on Hillary

(snip)

“I have tough questions for you, if you don’t mind them,” DeGeneres said.

“Well, thank you for dropping in, and we’ll see you later,” Clinton joked.

“Now listen here: Here’s my first question, Sen. Clinton,” DeGeneres continued.

“Now, I have said I have a problem with glitter. It should be banned. It doesn’t warn you. There’s glitter on your fingers. There’s glitter everywhere. You open a card. You open the wrapping paper…Will you put a ban on glitter?”

Not exactly debate prep material, but Clinton seemed plenty game to go along.

“Well, I have been asked so many difficult questions in my life. And, you know, some questions you can answer yes or no. But when it comes to glitter, what on earth would grade-school children do for their special projects? So maybe, maybe what we do is we ban glitter for anyone over… 12?”

That worked for DeGeneres.

“Good idea. That’s what I like about you. I like that you have solutions,” she said.

DeGeneres then got serious for a moment, asking Clinton what she had to do to change the momentum in her race against Barack Obama.

“Well, we’re going to win Ohio and Michigan,” Clinton said to screams and cheers – before rewinding on that one.

“Ohio and Texas,” she corrected. “I already won Michigan.”

DeGeneres asked if the contests were make-or-break for the New York senator’s presidential bid.

“Ellen, I’d say it ranks way up there with banning glitter,” Clinton said.

(snip)

Is there a reason VP Cheney had to be thrown into the opening paragraph?

Well, it IS the Washington Post.

What the F--- does "¿minences grises" mean?

I think it has something to do with the smelly stains on Hillary's pant suit.

I love it! A Clintonoid who derides the press for mentioning Drudge as a source for “hard news,” but then himself uses a sketch from SNL as proof of news!

But don’t count the Clintons out... Like any wild animal, they’re most dangerous when cornered. Remember that they own the high power players in the dem party. And I have no doubt that while collecting FBI files on their “enemies” in the republican party, then got plenty on their erstwhile “friends” in the dem party as well. And don’t forget that they’ve got the ties to foreign governments for unlimited cash, and the top bag men in politics.

Nope... Hillary could well be the nominee, even if she didn’t win a single primary.

Mark

When Time's Jay Newton-Small inquired about the Obama photo on Drudge, Singer used the occasion to complain about the press's failure to examine Obama's ties to violent radicals who were part of the Weathermen of the 1960s. "As far as I can tell, there was absolutely no follow-up on the part of the Obama traveling press corps," he said.

I didn't recall hearing he was part of the Weathermen! I believe it, though!

Weatherman, known colloquially as the Weathermen and later the Weather Underground Organization, was a violent U.S. Radical Left group consisting of splintered-off members and leaders of the Students for a Democratic Society which formed on the campus on the University of Michigan in the 1960s. They took their name from a line from the Bob Dylan song 'Subterranean Homesick Blues' "You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows." The group referred to itself as a revolutionary organization of men and women whose purpose was to carry out a series of attacks that would achieve the revolutionary overthrow of the Government of the United States.[citation needed] Their attacks were mostly bombings of government buildings, executed after calling in bomb-threats and making sure their target buildings were evacuated. The Weathermen imploded shortly after the U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam in 1973 and the conquest of South Vietnam by the communist North in 1975, which saw the general decline of the New Left, of which Weatherman had been a part.

Hillary has a greater problem in facing the Barack Obama Nation. She needs Lifebuoy. "Lifebuoy stops B.O."

He discounts Drudge but then refers to a SNL spoof? What a buffoon.
