Republican presidential front-runner John McCain on Monday retracted his earlier statement he would lose the November election if he did not convince Americans they were winning the war in Iraq.
"I don't mean that I'll, quote, lose," McCain told reporters on his campaign bus. "I mean that it's an important issue in the judgment of the American voters."
"It's not often I retract a comment," said the likely Republican nominee.
McCain, a staunch supporter of the Iraq war, said earlier in the day he would lose the election if he did not convince the American public the U.S. military was succeeding in Iraq.
Most Americans now say the 2003 invasion of Iraq was a bad idea and disapprove of the way President George W. Bush has waged it.

Check Gallup’s website. They poll the question fairly regularly. Last stats I’ve seen from this month are that 56% want a clear timetable for withdrawal and 60% believe the war was a mistake from the beginning.
The Constitution doesn’t have to contain the specific words, “Iraq” and “immigration” to cover the situation.
“The Congress shall have the power:
-to declare war;
-to provide rules calling forth the militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress insurrection and repel invasions.”
McCain, as one of the most powerful members of Congress, has been complicit in the Congress’ dereliction of duty on both issues, by not insisting on a declaration of war, and by not repelling the invasion on our southern border.
And then of course there’s that pesky First Amendment, which he violated with McCain-Feingold. McCain, who took the same oath I did many years ago to “support and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic” has proven himself to be a domestic enemy of the Constitution.
You're giving McCain way too much credit.
Thanks to McCain, I have developed a sure-fire way to self-medicate during this election. Every time he says "my friends", I'll drink a beer. I won't sober up until well into 2009.
Which was a lot tougher than the the amnesty that Ronald Reagan signed into LAW.
:::::
What Reagan did, does not validate the underminding of our legal system and our soverignty. BOTH were wrong, and amnesty still is. There is only ONE set of laws in America, not two.

So, I assume that, if Ronald Reagan were resurrected from the grave and brought back to Earth as a healthy 65 year old and were running for President in 2008, you would be denouncing him as a "RINO" and proclaiming that you would rather throw your vote away and put Barak Obama in the White House rather that vote for Ronald "Amnesty" Reagan?
All Presidents have the power to grant "amnesty" and "pardons". That does not make the original crime legal.
Exactly. They aren’t even giving the U.S their oil contracts. What a joke!
>”I remember the 2000 debates with Bush/Gore -”<
-thanks for the reminder about what he said,. *then*.
>”- Bush said over and over he did not want us to be in the nation building business — like what happened to that?”<
Yup. Mission creep. -Again; it’s time to bring our troops home.
That sounds about right. Heck, even a lot of conservatives may push the lever for Obama once they see him pair off with the grumpy old man who loves to talk about “my friends.”
So, I assume that, if Ronald Reagan were resurrected from the grave.....

You assume alot, and ignore the law. Again, BOTH were wrong, along with all their accomplices in the Congress. To legalize, and support, the breaking of laws is wrong. And the effects on this country and its LEGAL CITIZENS is horrible, to say the least. Rationalize all you want. The deliberate support for the breaking of laws just makes the problem worse, and Washington wants to sweep it under the rug, with amnesty. The politicians’ cop out to upholding the law and losing a few ill-gotten votes. The vast majority of the citizens of America have spoken loud and clear on this issue. They want their laws upheld, their soverignty protected, their security protected, and to not have American citizenship turned into a party joke.
More senatorial “foot in mouth” disease.
I can understand why polls obtain such results after constant Lame Stream Media attacks against the administration and the war (some rightfully so, but much of it deceitful). I’d still be careful not to take polls at face value. They are extremely easy to manipulate.
It’s anecdotal, but I know conservative homeschool moms who are planning to vote Dem for the first time in their lives this November over the war issue. Based on that, I tend to believe these polls.
But we’ll see in November when the real poll is taken.
McCain es loco
Yes, that is the only poll that will tell the story.
I just noticed your tagline. Please thank your son from me for his service.
Staged or not, Obama Rama is bringing telEvangelism to the political arena in a way going WAY over folks heads. What is the difference? The plate/bucket gets passed, preaching, and getting slain in the “spirit.”
Thank you, and I’ll let him know.
“Time to bring our guys home.”
Ahmadinejad concurs! He can fill the void. Then everything will be peachy./s
“Last poll I saw was 65% want out!”
Source please.
“McCain, as one of the most powerful members of Congress, has been complicit in the Congress dereliction of duty on both issues, by not insisting on a declaration of war”
Why do I keep seeing all of these silly Ron Paul arguements? Hey LadyNavyVet, cite the time Saddam complied with our cease fire. Do you recognize the War Powers Act? (The Paulistinains declare legislation they aren’t familiar with as ‘unconstitutional’ and pretend it doesn’t exist.)
