"I think there is a strain within the pro-Israel community that says unless you adopt an unwavering pro-Likud ap-proach to Israel, then you're anti-Israel, and that can't be the measure of our friendship with Israel," leading Democratic presidential contender Illinois Senator Barack Obama said Sunday.
"If we cannot have an honest dialogue about how do we achieve these goals, then we're not going to make progress," he said.
He also criticized the notion that anyone who asks tough questions about advancing the peace process or tries to secure Israel by anyway other than "just crushing the opposition" is being "soft or anti-Israel."
Obama made the comments in a closed-door meeting with several members of Cleveland's Jewish community, who will be participating in the crucial Ohio primary to be held next Tuesday.

I don’t think Obama will be borrowing those words from MLK...
Obama sounds like an old lefty. South Africa, etc.
In fact, I think the old lefties have dropped that type of anti-Israel buzz phrases..Obama is behind the times.
did he say “neocon” yet?
“Pro-Israel needn’t be Pro-Likud?”
Whatever.
I’m sure folks in Israel are real pleased to hear lectures from polly-tishuns in the states.
And as US national, I would urge all the “pro-Israeli” citizens in the states to put their money where their mouth is and immigrate.
One nation, one loyalty.
That letter has apparently been debunked as a hoax, however, King did indeed say “When people criticize Zionism, they mean Jews, and this is anti-semitism” at a Harvard appearance in 1968.

hmmm
that’s why it didn’t occur to me to consider that it was a hoax...
so I found this
http://www.camera.org/index.asp?x_context=8&x_article=369
but the basic point I was trying to get at is that King saw through those who claimed they were anti-zionists and one true sentence makes the point a lot better than a made up essay
I agree.
You don’t have to be pro-Likud to be pro-Israel, but it helps.
The scary part is that Obama is not that far removed compared to the Bush Admin...whose policy has been going anti-Semitic the past few yrs....Obama is like Condi Rice without the skirt
I doubt you get much difference from McCain...who leans left on everything...and doubtful he would go against the current anti-Semitic trend of the US Left
Wow Che is the equivalent to David Duke among NJ’s Jews?
That is a stunning analogy...seriously...
Che Obama comes from the Internationale Movement, yet he retains a huge streak of Farrakhanian Black Nationalism as evidenced by his choices in house of worship, but the thought that North Eastern Judaism not supporting Che Obama does strike me as odd.
Do you think Obama has a serious problem, one that would help out McCain? Or at the end of the day, will Liberal Jews vote the same as they always have?
No way does McCain have the anti-Israel record or apparent philosophy of Obama. BUT, I do believe McCain is making a big mistake by not reaching out to the Jewish community right now and making his positions clear.
“And as US national, I would urge all the pro-Israeli citizens in the states to put their money where their mouth is and immigrate (sic).
One nation, one loyalty.”
I’m making Aliya in the fall with my family.
But since we’re on the subject, should pro-unified Ireland types emigrate (note the proper usage) to County Cork? What about Italian Americans who join the Knights of Columbus? What if you’re concerned about Darfur? Do you then have to go there and live?
Fair points. The US obviously has to have a foreign policy where we form alliances and pick sides in the world. It is commenting on political systems inside other countries which I don’t like. Obviously, there is a need to debate the effects countries have on the world at large.
Additionally, while we have sympathies for nations/peoples, etc. those must be subordinate to US national interest.
Kennedy and Reagan where Americans—not Irishman who were American Presidents. Any sympathies they might have had for their ancestral soil had to be subordinate to the greater need for an alliance with Great Britain. Roosevelt did not lead the US to war when the lowlands where invaded by Germany. Eisenhower could not refuse to lead a war against his country of origin...
and I guess most of the other Presidents where Anglos so I have run out of examples.
I’m rabbling too much—so I’ll just say I didn’t mean to come across as a ‘Knownothing get the heck out stereotype’ I’m just having a really inelegant day.
The Jews in America better wake up, smell the coffee and face reality; the democrat party and its leading presidential candidate do not support the Jews, Israel or the war on ISLAMIC/Muslim terrorists. The truth is; their goals, policies and presidential candidates actively support Islam, Muslims and their stated goals: hatred of the Jews and the ultimate destruction of both the Jews and the nation of Israel.
If the Republicans had a actual Conservative candidate it wouldn’t matter how far afield to the left Obama went, but as it will be McCain it will have Lieberman Democrats seriously considering a vote for McCain so they don’t have to live under a Ned Lamont as President.
Of course some polls showed Lamont still had a larger share of the CT Jewish vote that Lieberman, but the vote split somewhere around 40-60 or 60-40 depending on who you believe. In McCain/Obama there is little chance Obama would carry the 70%+ of the Jewish vote.
People who have brought Obama’s name up sense some sort of hidden crazed radical hiding under his polished veneer, and no one was real enthralled by the idea because no one knows if he is THEIR crazed radical or the other guy’s crazed radical. It’s not even that they opposed a radical taking the office if it meant real change, but Obama is all smoke and mirrors. Taking money from shady Iraqis billionaires isn’t going to endear Obama to Jewish political donors who are only multimillionaires.
There may be a whole gang of “only” multimillionaires, it was my thought that in North Eastern politics those folks make up the heart and soul of local politics, that may matter more then only money.
When Hilde crashes and burns, those folks will have a few choices to make.
thanks for the insight JerseyHighlander.
This is an incredible diplomatic faux pas. Hillary’s gonna pound him for it and he deserves it.
