Dan Rather Backs 'Outstanding' NYT Journos on McCain Hit Piece
NewsBusters ^

Posted on 02/25/2008 3:21:18 PM PST by RatherBiased.com

If you're the New York Times's Jim Rutenberg or Bill Keller the last person you probably want in your corner is Dan "National Guard Forgery Story" Rather. Yet on the syndicated "Chris Matthews Show," Rather jumped to their defense, on last week's McCain hit piece, by declaring them "outstanding journalists."

Now Rather did hedge a bit saying if the story wasn't true they could be "in a heap of trouble," but he concluded, that in the end, their reporting should be trusted because they were: "Very responsible journalists."

Yeah, he represents some dot-com outfit. I was expecting him to drag out an Amway poster on an easel.

The word rather should take on a historic verb meaning such as fisk or bork did. It would mean to wish for something to be believed even though you know its a lie. And it fits so well. I’d “rather” that the facts coming out of iraq supported my belief that things weren’t going so well.

Rather’s and NYT’s hit pieces are right up there with the lying hit pieces leveled against Governor Mike Huckabee in the state of Arkansas.

“I had someone at the Houston police station shoot me with heroin so I could do a story about it. The experience was a special kind of hell. I came out understanding full well how one could be addicted to ‘smack,’ and quickly.”

“I’ve tried everything. I can say to you with confidence, I know a fair amount about LSD. I’ve never been a social user of any of these things, but my curiosity has carried me into a lot of interesting areas.”
