U.S. immigration officials say today they've determined the identity of the 24-year-old woman who drove a van into a school bus, killing four children last week in southwestern Minnesota.
The driver has been identified as Olga Marina Franco and she's from Guatemala, according to Gail Montenegro, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Chicago.
Franco has been charged with four counts of criminal vehicular homicide stemming from the Feb. 19 crash near Cottonwood. Witnesses say she blew through a stop sign, jumped over some railroad tracks and hit the rear of the bus, which tipped over and collided with a pickup truck.
The woman initially said her name was Alianiss Nunez Morales, but ICE officials said she was using a fake name and was here illegally.
Immigration agents first interviewed Franco on Feb. 21. During that interview, she said she was from Mexico. Investigators ran her fingerprints through databases and found no matches, hinting that she had no prior contact with immigration officials.
ICE has placed a detainer on Franco, so that if she is released from the Lyon County jail in Marshall for any reason, she will be turned over to federal authorities and placed in deportation proceedings.

Gee whiz, if there were this many military people killed in Iraq, there’d be a fire storm — so why aren’t candidates up in arms about our citizens being killed here on our own roads by illegals?

The driver of the school bus was not responsible for the accident. This woman was driving a private vehicle, is an illegal alien and was responsible for the accident.
Tim Pawlenty, Governor and potential VP nominee for mcpain, hasn’t exactly been a success on illegal immigration. Since this thing crawled across our border illegally and killed four youngsters, a mcpain/pawlenty ticket must be shown in this light always. mcpain needs to review this case again and again when trying to revive comprehensive immigration. This is gut-wrentching.
What has been mind-boggling for me from the beginning is they couldn’t figure out her Spanish speaking country of origin.
All Spanish speaking countries have their own unique accents. And depending from what area of that country, there are also regional accents.

This is a lot of bovine excrement. Would we be protesting if our weather weren’t such a deterrent? I can’t believe how calmly we are taking this. 4 kids dead. 3 sets of parents whose lives will never be made whole. I don’t want the deaths of these poor children to be exploited, but if this doesn’t provide impetus for us to change our tolerance of illegal immigration, what the dickens will?
