250 rounds of .50 belted in cans would be almost 50 cans...that’s an awful lot of space for something like an F-4 or similar....

Are you sure about that?
Fighters didn’t carry anywhere near that much. I think they only carried about 1200 rds total. That’s a lot of weight for one plane.

They fired in short bursts to conserve.
