Why the GOP Lost Voters Like Me (Geraldo Rivera on Immigration)
New York Post ^ | February 24, 2008 | Geraldo Rivera

Posted on 02/24/2008 1:37:15 PM PST by lowbridge

No political party can prevail nationally on Anglo votes alone, so the long-term danger to Republicans is that their party is sending a message to Latinos that it doesn't want us.

"There has been too much of an anti-immigration tone," Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Belart, a South Florida Republican congressmen, told USA Today. "When people start to perceive that immigrants are being put in the same category as a threat to national security, it's hard to get your message across."

-snip

"Bush has worked incredibly hard for his Hispanic vote share. He reversed historic Republican Party positions on issues of importance to Hispanics and showed a willingness to listen to the needs of the Latino community."

That respectful romance with Latinos ended abruptly in the lead up to the November 2006 elections, when extremists on immigration hijacked the GOP.

One of them, Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, may wish he had taken a more moderate stance instead of essentially adopting the position of the Minutemen and similar radical anti-immigration groups. These groups promulgate their wildly exaggerated portrayal of a cascade of brown people overwhelming our southern borders, running loose to rape, steal and murder on the streets of our cities.

From a YouTube forum: “Tejano44: I was born in Tejas but my heart belongs to Mexico since my forebearers were from there...” And they wonder why we are reluctant to accept people who break our laws as citizens with full entitlements.

Republicans should push a bill that does nothing but secure the border and strengthen our immigration laws.

This would split border security and immigration enforcement, which is extremely popular with people from both parties, from a guest worker/citizenship program, which is incredibly controversial with people in both parties.

If the Democrats want to argue that we should leave our borders wide-open while we debate a controversial guest worker program, let them make that argument.

The GOP should unite behind a simple principle on illegal immigration: “Secure the border and enforce our laws.”

This is an endorsement for the GOP as being the anti-illegal party.

Was it that long ago when he boasted of his Jewish heritage before Latinos became fashionable? This attention monger gets far too much air time from Murdoch.

Hi Guenn.

I don't right much care what Mike is signing. His record belies his new found loyalty to "legal" immigration.

I am living in Arkansas, and we've seen and heard him act contrary to what he now claims to believe.

Doesn't matter, he's not getting elected.

a great idea...but can Conservatives get Mccain's attention and create this upswell from the Conservative base? Then can Conservatives hold McCain's feet and our other congressperson to the fire long enough to help prevent more death visited upon our Citizens from this problem? I do not know the answer...so far....I will admit, I have failed miserably, and have only attracted my Representative, but even my Representative has said things which cause me worry, but I am in......if all of us want to work this angle.

It’s truly too bad that Geraldo Rivera didn’t become a conservative despite being friends with Howie Carr among others.

There’s also too much of a “up yours pro-law abiders” tone by all of the “favoritism towards illegal immigrants” crowd, but I see nothing about this anywhere!

“The Serbs did what you said, refused to surrender to an invading force.”

Well, there is that. Lesson for us to learn about our own border swarm problem and the anti-sovereignty scum that facilitate it.

Yes, I agree. In fact, see post #71 following yours, which makes the same point.

I’ve been saying for 7 years that Bush needed to clearly distinguish between Hispanic citizens and illegals. Only last year did it become apparent that he deliberately preferred not to do so.

Sure, if Bush had been reaching out to Hispanic citizens and saying that his only problem with illegals was that they were, well, illegal . . . then he would have clarified this point. Instead, he has obfuscated it, and given the MSM an opportunity to play the race card, pretending that conservatives are bigots.

That would not have worked if Bush had played it right. But he chose not to, and now it’s going to throw a lot of Hispanics into the Democrat camp. Not the thoughtful ones, perhaps, but there’s no reason to expect Hispanics to be any more thoughtful than other American voters, and the MSM propaganda has certainly worked with them.

Good point too. Sorry I missed it earlier. I don’t get subtle stuff very well at all.

Thank You for your reply....Conservatives must stick together, for without a fight for right, all Americans will lose...I know I am preaching to the choir....I hope that was a reply on anglian’s suggestion made also, not only mine. Look folks, I am not a leader, but there are plenty of Leaders here...I hope to see mail and suggestions, I will reply and help all I can...I am tired of seeing our Citizen’s die, from an invading force, while nothing is done....Again, I am not a Leader, but I will follow, if someone will take the lead.
