Raul Castro becomes Cuba's leader

HAVANA — Nearly 50 years of rule by Fidel Castro ended in Cuba on Sunday as parliament chose his brother Raul to replace him — a transition that leaves the island's communist system unshaken.

The new president proposed consulting with the ailing 81-year-old Fidel on all major decisions of state, and parliament approved the proposal.

The vote came five days after Fidel said he was retiring, capping a career in which he frustrated efforts by 10 U.S. presidents to oust him.

The transition was not likely to bring a major shift in policies of the communist government that have put it at odds with the United States. But many Cubans were hoping it would open the door to modest economic reforms and improvement in their daily lives

it’s always been understood.

the US has sealed drug indictments on Raul from the 80s and early 90s.

former cartel boys like Ledher and Mono Abello and some of the SantaCruz/Orejuela gang testified along with some local Miami Cuban American lads like Willie Falcon and Sal Magluta

for years testifitying in the Raul Castro indictments was common for busted high level dopers in Southern Ditrict of FLA

wonder what will happen with that now.

Illeana Ros Leitinan’s husband Dexter was behind a lot of it along with Bush I’s DEA task force.

must be weird and unpleasant, after a lifetime working for your brother’s dictatorship, to have him be invalid or dead, and know your own reign will be the end of his work AND probably fairly short-lived just in terms of your own mortality.

Couldn’t agree more on Andy Garcia’s “The Lost City.” I just watched it on my big screen for the second time, in the HD-DVD version and it was moving.
Yes, moving the second time.

I don’t think Raul will be in a hurry to take a trip to Miana.

I didn’t know that!

I heard the other day that he’s going to be closer to Brazil’s leadership, and backing away from Chavez, because we have a better relationship with Brazil than with Venezuela.

Could that be true?

If so, with those sealed indictments hanging over his head, what do you make of it?

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss...

Castro is Castro is Castro ...

Hopefully he won't be quite as ugly as the "F" guy, tho???

I don’t know much about Raul but he probably learned from his ‘big brother’!

You may be right.

But I think that nobody could be worse for Cuba than
the guy that has a choke-hold on it for almost FIFTY
years. Bro Raul CAN’T be worse, imho. May actually
be better ...

:)

You’re right and I hope he has a different mindset than Castro does. Perhaps Raul was out and about more and knows how much the Cubans would benefit from good relations with the U.S.

I know many who would like to visit Cuba!

Raul is also a bastard.

Not only are many political prisoners beaten and tortured (where's McChurian when you need him) but the Cuban regime is racist, excluding the black majority from power--just like Bill Clinton's mentor William J. Fulbright and the U.S. Democrat Party to this day.

When the Twelfth Imam from Chicago comes to power he'll walk across the ninety miles of water and fix all that.

Only he can fix our souls.

Our souls are as holey as Elian's boat, but the Obamatron from Ronco can repair soul holes in minutes and costs pennies to use.

You'll wonder how you ever got along without it.

I figured so. The fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Yes, our souls are all ‘holey’ and well suited to be filled with despair.

I’m trying to stay out of the melee of the election discussions, religion and politics can harm friendships.
