4 major candidates on education
Fox News ^ | 02-22-08 | CALVIN WOODWARD

Posted on 02/24/2008 10:01:12 AM PST by SoftballMominVA

Hillary Clinton - Proposed $10 billion for universal preschool. More money for special education. Opposes performance-based merit pay for teachers, favors incentives for teachers who work in places and on subjects where shortages exist. Supported No Child Left Behind accountability law but says it has not been properly financed or run, and should be replaced. $10,000 higher education scholarships for all who engage in national service full-time for a year. Raise value of tuition tax credit to a maximum $3,500 from $1,650.

Obama - Encourage but not require universal pre-kindergarten programs, expand teacher mentoring programs and reward teachers with higher pay not tied to standardized test scores, in $18 billion plan to be paid for in part by delaying elements of moon and Mars missions. Change No Child Left Behind "so that we're not just teaching to a test and crowding out programs like art and music." Tax credit to pay up to $4,000 of college expenses for students who perform 100 hours of community service a year.

Huckabee - States are responsible for education and should be given more authority to run it, not Washington.

McCain - Favors parental choice of schools, including vouchers for private schools when approved by local officials, and right of parents to choose home schooling. More money for community college education.

It's interesting to compare candidates side by side. Both of the Republicans trust locals and parents. Both of the Democrats trust the government

Public Education Ping

This list is for intellectual discussion of articles and issues related to public education (including charter schools) from the preschool to university level. Items more appropriately placed on the “Naughty Teacher” list, “Another reason to Homeschool” list, or of a general public-school-bashing nature will not be pinged. In addition, posters who consistently engage in flaming will not be added to the list

If you would like to be on or off this list, please ping Amelia, Gabz, or SoftballMominVa

And this surprises you? Why?

It doesn't surprise me as much as make me quite dismayed as to the attitude the democrats have towards the country. They really do see themselves as our de-facto guardian with the idea that we are just not fit to take care of ourselves in any way.

The rest of the article discusses other issues too. It's incredible to take a single issue and chart it side by side.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news --- but they are WRONG!

Huckabee is a darling of the NEA, and loved No Child Left Behind.

And if anyone thinks John McCain will lift one finger to get the Feds out of their unconstitutional stranglehold on public education, they’re smoking rope.

As you were polite in your request to be added to the PS ping list, I will be equally as polite in declining your request. My personal reason is that I will not subject myself or others to your abusive words towards those who hold a different attitude as you in regard to public education.

Have a nice day.

We have an awesome Pre-K program in Georgia. 100% funded by the lottery, so those who choose to play the lottery also fund education.

Works out really nicely and the kids have really benefited well from the program.

I am all for Pre-K programs.

I’m a public school teacher. I’d like to be on a list for legitimate discussion, please.

Doesn't the lottery fund college educations also?

If you see an article that explains how that works, could you post it? Others may be interested too.

Oh yeah, Lottery funds college ed too. No reason to post an article, it is simple.

If you maintain a 3.0 GPA in high school, HOPE pays for 100% tuition and books to ANY public college in the state, as long as you maintain said 3.0.

That easy.:) I can go back and get a EdS or PhD on HOPE, or doing continuing ed, etc.

Really, really nice program.

Federal education expenditures are not permitted by the Constitution and I have the opportunity to vote for a man who has made law abridging free speech in spite of the oath he took.

I'm in favor of pre-K programs as well. I think they should be available to all, but not required for all. Actually, it's the lower socioeconomic kids who need them the most.

I also tend to agree with E.D. Hirsch that we really need a coherent national curriculum, such as his Core Knowledge curriculum. I don't see it happening any time soon, however.

I teach science in a public high school in Ga. There are a few of us conservatives in “ government education” as boortz likes to call it. We live in a conservative community, have no union, so it works for me! Just wanted to let you know that you are not alone!!

Thanks—

I live in one of the most conservative areas of Texas (near Texas A&M— where Boortz went to university). We have no unions here. Lots of Southern Baptists and, in our particular area, lots of Catholics. People hold vigil outside Family Planning multiple days per week, even though they don’t do abortions here. (They wouldn’t dare.)

It has become so pointless. All the pols pretend education is breathlessly important when it is a matter of funding it, and then on the actual curriculuum, they gut everything real and replace it all with criticising music videos from a lesbian perspective and contemplating their navels and grievances and learning how science and capitalism have raped sacred Gaia. That way everyone can leave school at maybe 28 with $300,000 in debt and the ability to drive a cab.

The nation doesn't need more resources poured into the same utterly disfunctional education system. It needs grownups to barge in and fire everybody, kick backsides and take names, run all the politicized mountebank nonsense out on a rail, and teach the objective truth.

And no pol has the stomach to even bring up the actual subject, because they are afraid it might make some media flak for the lesbian stalinist brainwashers upset.

Well guess what, we are beyond upset yesterday at all this waste and stupidity. Forget fixing it, defund the entire parasitic mess, yesterday. Burn it to the ground.
