On this, the 35th anniversary of the tragic Supreme Court decision which legalized abortion in all 50 states, New Yorks citizens find human life under renewed attack, this time through a radical bill proposed by Gov. Eliot Spitzer.
Kathleen M. Gallagher, director of pro-life activities for the New York State Catholic Conference, made the following comment today:
There is much good news to report on the pro-life front. Nationally, abortions have fallen to their lowest rate since 1976, as more people, particularly young people, are taking a fresh look at abortion and seeing not empowerment for women but the killing of a generation of babies. While the pro-abortion movement celebrates a womans right to choose, and demands even easier availability of abortions, most Americans are slowly coming to terms with what our society has wrought, and they are turning away from this horrific choice.
Oddly, many abortion advocates look at the lower abortion rates and rather than rejoice at lives saved, instead see a threat. Here in New York, Gov. Eliot Spitzer has acted aggressively to make abortion even more available and common than it already is, while stomping on the rights of religious providers like Catholic hospitals. His euphemistically titled Reproductive Health and Privacy Protection Act would raise abortion to the level of a fundamental right, like the freedom of speech, and would therefore prohibit virtually any restrictions at all.
This bill would ensure the easy availability of late-term abortions of fully formed infants, even if there was no threat to a womans physical health, and allow non-doctors to perform abortions. It would prohibit discrimination regarding the right to abortion to such an extent that Catholic hospitals could be forced to provide abortions or lose their license to operate. It would prohibit parental notification, expand the over-the-counter availability of the morning-after pill to children of any age and force all insurers to cover abortion for any reason.
In many ways, this intolerable bill is more radical than the original state law legalizing abortion nearly 40 years ago. It would potentially force the closure of Catholic health care institutions and undoubtedly lead to the deaths of countless unborn children who otherwise might have had a chance at life. No matter what Mr. Spitzer calls his bill, clearly it is not about reproductive health. On the contrary, this bill is about death, and it must be rejected.

If these were special Moslem hospitals, all the stops would be pulled out to ensure that the beliefs of the hospital administrators and staff were respected, accommodated, and handled with the utmost cultural sensitivity. After all, NYC now has publicly-funded Arabic schools.

“Pro-abortion forces are emboldened by the rise of Obama, a pro-abortion fanatic and the most extreme abortion advocate ever to run for president.”
....
“Obama has spent a scant two years in the Senate but served eight years at the Illinois capitol in Springfield.
During that time, Obama voted AGAINST (emphasis mine) a bill that received national attention and would protect babies born alive after botched abortions.”

“The abortion empire strikes back

New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, a loyal water boy for pro-abortion groups, has launched a crackdown on crisis pregnancy centers.
This is a direct assault on the front lines of compassionate conservatism. An estimated 3,000 crisis pregnancy centers offer abortion alternatives nationwide. Most are non-profit and affiliated with Catholic charities. Radical feminists, who push abortion as the only acceptable choice, call these life-affirming pregnancy centers “deceptive.” The National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL) sells a guide to sabotaging the centers’ missionary work.
Spitzer, a Democrat, promised NARAL three years ago that his tax-subsidized “reproductive rights unit,” staffed by abortion activists, would carry on the campaign. He delivered.
According to Chris Slattery, the founder of Expectant Mother Care, which provides the most comprehensive crisis pregnancy services in New York City, Spitzer issued subpoenas last Friday to pregnancy resource centers in Staten Island and Manhattan demanding documents related to their services. Spitzer’s office refused to provide me with any information on his legal maneuvering, but more subpoenas are expected. Spitzer’s move “is a triple attack on the First Amendment — on our freedom of assembly, religion and speech,” Slattery told me.

So true, sadly.
Ping, and this can happen in ANY state.
I imagine closing the Catholic hospitals in New York would cripple the health care system. But what would the “steamroller” care about that?
I saw a beautiful, tiny baby at Mass today. obama and spitzer say it’s alright to kill children like her.
It’s too bad that pro-life anti baby killing policy leaders can’t learn from the liberals in “Tobacco/Sheeple Control” and from the succesful campaign on drunk driving.
The goal should be to “reduce public tolerance” for baby killing. Incrementalism, public service announcements, social engineering to change thoughts and behaviors and attitude.
It works.
Instead, we are losing 34-2 in the bottom of the 9th inning with 2 outs and nobody on. We’re trying to hit a 33 run homer to win the game with SCOTUS justices.
Take a page out of the liberal playbook on Tobacco Control. It won’t change things tomorrow morning, but it will work eventually.
I saw a great giant billboard on the highway. It showed a cute newborn baby girl with the caption “Kill her today, it’s murder. Kill her yesterday, it’s abortion.”
That’s what needs to be done to change the culture.

Especially pray for the State of New York.
New York reaps what they sow. They elect liberals to govern them, this is the result. A cesspool of depravity and devaluing of life.
You make good points, but by your very example, you are showing that such efforts are being made. And I think such awareness is spreading. Minds before laws.
For me, seeing the ultrasound of my first child at 8 weeks gestation, when she was in my wife's womb and had a heartbeat and four limbs and a face and head, it hit home personally that it was a tiny developing human being. not that I wasnt already prolife and knew these things, but it became personal not just intellectual fact for me. It's hard not to see the truth of the pro-life position after you've seen an ultrasound of a developing preborn human aka fetus. Make a 60 second ad of that and let America watch it and minds will change.
You and me both. I was probably a libertarian pro-choice sort until I heard my son’s heartbeat at 5 weeks gestation for the first time 7 years ago.
He’s a scary man. Ice cold. I can’t imagine why he was voted in. We need a GOOD conservative next time around. One who is pro life and has good values. Anybody out there????
