Russia's ambassador to Nato, Dmitry Rogozin, has warned that Russia could use military force if the Kosovo independence dispute escalates.
"If the EU develops a unified position or if Nato exceeds its mandate set by the UN, then these organisations will be in conflict with the UN," he said.
In that case Russia would "proceed on the basis that in order to be respected we need to use brute force", he said.
Many EU members have recognised Kosovo, but several oppose recognition.
Russia, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, backs Serbia, which has condemned the independence declaration issued by the Kosovo parliament on 17 February.
On Tuesday members of the Serb minority in Kosovo attacked two border posts staffed by UN personnel and Kosovo police.
The violence led the Nato troops in Kosovo - known as K-For - to reinforce the border with Serbia.
Kosovo's majority ethnic Albanians are following a plan drawn up by UN special envoy Martti Ahtisaari for "supervised independence", which was rejected by Serbia.
Russian media outcry
The EU will soon deploy 2,000 officials to strengthen law and order in Kosovo, which has a population of about two million. Russia argues that the mission has no legal basis.
There has been a furious reaction in some Russian media to Kosovo's declaration of independence.
A commentary in the Vesti Plus analytical programme, on state-run television, called the assassinated former Serbian Prime Minister, Zoran Djindjic, a Western puppet who had "received a well-deserved bullet".
It said Djindjic had sold national heroes to the International War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague.
The programme concluded that Serbia - and not only Serbia - must now decide whether to acquiesce in what has happened, or resist.

Well, if the Russians said no one has to worry, that should be good enough. Just like the 1939 Hitler-Stalin non-aggression pact. i.e.
Article I. Both High Contracting Parties obligate themselves to desist from any act of violence, any aggressive action, and any attack on each other, either individually or jointly with other Powers.
You failed to mention the movable feast known as "Greater Albania". When the Albanian terrorists re-start their terror campaign, it could be game on!
The use of "Kosova" as the staging area gives the surrounding countries all the justification they need to move in.
If Montenegro or Romania is on board, Russia would have easy access. If not, they can still pre-position troops and weapon systems, it's just a little more difficult.
However, the surrounding countries don't need Russian military might to smash the terrorists or their terroristic "state". Russian presence will should prevent NATO from taking aggressive action again. But, with the idiot that will be our next President, who knows!
They have a mandate as the Russians have a precense in BiH as SFOR..Serbia is next door.
Gosh this is confusing.
Hillary came out in favor of independence. So that must mean it is a bad idea, but Putin is against independence which means that is a bad idea. I am thinking maybe another iran-iraq war that could last 8 years and have the white flag french and the germans beg us to settle things like we have always done.

“Self determination for goups of people is an essential part of freedom. The Western World should embrace it. We have nothing to fear from free democratic peoples.”
So, when Mexico completes it’s similar invasion of the United States, you’re going to be ok with that?
“Free democratic peoples” is an interesting phrase to describe the slave-trading, drug-dealing, Muslims in the KLA.
With each thread the yarn gets thinner.
Albanians in Kosovo are not people. THey are an ethnic minority with their own domicile country, who became majority on the 4000sq.miles of Serbian territory, close to ALbanian border and when they became majority, they proclaimed unilateral independence. They used the flag of Albania in the ir conquest. Because it is a tell tale sigh, they were instructed to use new flag to hide it. The final plan is to take snateched Serbian territory and anex it to Albania.
It seems to me that in your dictionary freedom has different meaning than for the rest of the world.
“Albanians in Kosovo are not people.”
I think this is where you are going wrong.
People cannot be forced under a government the majority do not want. Whatever the birthrates, or other arguments. Once the population majority has changed, it is too late, and that applies in California, same as Kosova.
Of course, one could use force of arms to ethnically cleanse an area, to bring the population back to the ethnicity desired, but they would be war crimes etc.
Game over.
So you say that self determination is only available on a selective basis?
So you would support the secession of SoC to Mexico if it were to come to that? Ok, you do that, the rest of us won’t roll over and play dead.
Yes, Serbia's territorial integrity has just been violated and the violation is being defended by force. That is an act of war.
Yes, but Serbia is surrounded by hostile countries. Remember when the Russians could not secure flyover rights for their paratroopers during the Clinton war? I doubt they will be able to achieve that now that Bulgaria and Romania are firmly in the NATO camp.
OTOH, the Serbs can get the job done on their own if they are willing to eat the consequences.
You will need to remove or kill the Mexican majority. That would make you a war criminal, wouldn’t it?
The problem is the taking over of countries by immigrants with higher birthrates. The solution you offer is not acceptable, finding an acceptable solution is the question. Otherwise those with the highest birthrates will inherit the earth, that is the most primitave and backward.
A threat is a threat, you remove the threat.
Criminality is not an acceptable criteria.

You are pro-albanian?
