Try a Little Tenderness (Noonan on Obama)
Wall Street Journal ^ | 22 Feb 08 | Peggy Noonan

Posted on 02/22/2008 8:58:10 AM PST by Robbin

His problem was, is, his wife's words, not his, the speech in which she said that for the first time in her adult life she is proud of her country, because Obama is winning. She later repeated it, then tried to explain it, saying of course she loves her country. But damage was done. Why? Because her statement focused attention on what I suspect are some basic and elementary questions that were starting to bubble out there anyway.

* * *

Here are a few of them.

Are the Obamas, at bottom, snobs? Do they understand America? Are they of it? Did anyone at their Ivy League universities school them in why one should love America? Do they confuse patriotism with nationalism, or nativism? Are they more inspired by abstractions like "international justice" than by old visions of America as the city on a hill, which is how John Winthrop saw it, and Ronald Reagan and JFK spoke of it?

Have they been, throughout their adulthood, so pampered and praised--so raised in the liberal cocoon--that they are essentially unaware of what and how normal Americans think? And are they, in this, like those cosseted yuppies, the Clintons?

So do you brush off all achievements by white women since they benefit from AA the most? I rarely read of anyone doing this.
And personally, I don’t put much stake in Internet claims of personal experiences.

You bet, AA is discrimination. No different than any other form of discrimination.

As to not believing my personal story, that’s ok, but you sound like you don’t believe it happens.
I’m a government contractor. It happens every day. In this case, the minority was not black, but Eskimo.
But the bottom line was they new nothing about the program, and had no one on their staff that new anything about it.
But the two companies that did, were not awarded. Good news is, we’ve still got our jobs because they can’t do the work.
Bad news is, the taxpayer is paying more for the same service. But this way all the money is funneled thru a minorities hands.
If that makes you feel good, go for it. But it’s not fair, nor cost effective.

I have not read the entire article..........but this will be forgotten in a while. One week in politics can be a lifetime, or something along those lines.

That Ms Michelle is one mean dame, used to getting her way, and weighted down by the heavy chip permanently emplanted on her shoulder.

Indeed and although the public may not have a clue, it's only a matter of time. She will make Mama Kerry look saintly.

His parents are dead-- mother died of ovarian cancer in the late 90's and father was killed in a car accident. Wish his mother was alive to see how far he's come.

Yep, they have.

Michelle Obama hasn’t said one thing about the US before the year 2007 that would make her proud to be a citizen of the greatest nation in the history of mankind that has placed her amongst the most privliged of the elite in this country.

I never thought that I would see a spouse of a presidential candidate who was more of a radical, narcissistic, arrogant, hubristic, self-entitled, and maddening solipsist than Hilary Clinton. To the nation’s dismay, I think we have found her.

The ascendency of BHO is the realization of the efforts of all the Cultural Marxists whose ideas were nurtered by the Gramcians who set up the Frankfurt School and spawned cultural radicals like Erich Fromm, Herbert Marcuse, and Theodore Adorno. Their intellectual progeny are thoroughly ensconced in the MSM, academia, Hollywood, and most importantly in the George Soros directed modern day Democratic Party which is the nest for all the Vipers on the left, the racial identity determininists, the radical feminists, the sexual deviationist lobby, the “watermelon” environmentalists, the open borders crowd and the anti-war seditionists who seek to steal from our magnificent armed forces the victory that they have earned with their blood and valor in the SAME MANNER as they stole our hard earned victory from those of us who are Vietnam vets.
Their apotheosis is the religion of Obama, the Lucifer deciever who would lead this great nation to Fabian Socialist HELL!!!

if folks would take the time before finger pointing the usual race card, they could simply google michelle obama and affirmative action and read volumes on how affirmative action programs played the pivotal role in her secondary education.

it is assumed but not validated as yet that her husband did the same

That’s scary!

I hope folks are paying attention.

I hate to say that is a “good graphic, Phil”, but I have to do so.

Thank you!

I don't know about the best article Peggy has written. Definitely in the top 10 though.

"By definition, Progressives hate America. Why would any clear thinking, sane person want to change the greatest country that ever existed on the face of the Planet Earth?"

"By definition, Progressives hate America. Why would any clear thinking, sane person want to change the greatest country that ever existed on the face of the Planet Earth?" - Amen!

Like many before her, Michelle has little understanding of her country and her countrymen. Her schooling has been more self pity than selflessness for her fellow citizens. She is frightening she is so angry....still. I have advocated all should read the Obama speeches on line....his hollowness are covered up by his dignity, grace and calmness, a stark difference from Senator Clinton’s stance. Don’t be fooled by either.

“There’s a certain belligerence and stridency in her manner that indicates a lack of confidence.”

Haha, I think I see the problem: you don’t realize that’s just a black woman thing. That’s how they be.

The best place to see how Obama thinks is in his first book, Dreams from my Father. He’s a highly intelligent, unusually self-aware person. But again, he’s a raving liberal, which is the actual problem.

Equality of opportunity is not good enough. The communist left wants equality of outcomes.

Sounds nice, but it will ruin America. Just like Communism ruined every other country in which it was tried.

I can think of at least 250 times I was proud to be an American in the last 5 years alone.

I don't think someone has to agree with me theoretically to be brilliant, and moral probity is not a prerequisite for theoretical ability, which is why even ayoung person can be theoretically brilliant.

But in practice there is still the fundamental distinction between having one's thinking properly oriented towards the good vs. mere cleverness. Obama strikes me as very intelligent and well intentioned but ultimately merely clever, not brilliant.

Think of it this way: how much more remarkable would Obama be if he truly understood economics and the Constitution instead of mouthing leftist platitudes.

“Think of it this way: how much more remarkable would Obama be if he truly understood economics and the Constitution instead of mouthing leftist platitudes.”

I’d certainly like him a lot more. But remember where this back-and-forth started: with the assumption that he must be some kind of affirmative action case just because he’s a black liberal. That’s a racist assumption. Plenty of white liberals are elected despite being wrong; Obama is by all appearances smarter and more talented than the vast majority of them, yet he’s the one with the AA tag. That’s what’s ridiculous.

I’m the one pointing [sic] the race card, even though you’re the ones accusing Obama of being an AA baby despite his being an obviously intelligent, talented guy? Well, what I’m doing is calling you out for playing the race card, something to which you may not be accustomed in the FR cocoon.

Barack Obama is a liberal, and for that reason should be opposed. For you to run around crying affirmative action when he’s by all appearances being a better writer, more self-aware, and more talented than almost every politician out there is, yes, racist.

I don't think that I was making that argument: I was trying to say (perhaps poorly) that both Obamas were undoubtedly the victims of a certain condescension I have seen in a both the corporate and academic environment where nothing any lberal black says gets questioned, no matter how nonsensical or extreme. Someone treated this way is robbed of any opportunity to understand thoroughly the positions they hold.

I think we will find out if this is true by seeing how well Obama deals with genuine challenges to his most cherished theoretical and moral presuppositions.
