As media digest the recent John McCain sex scandal allegations [0] by the New York Times, one side of the story seems destined to get ignored: one of the four co-authors took money from a liberal activist group to fund a hit piece about Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Kent.) in 2006.
Before becoming an investigative reporter for the Times, Pulitzer Prize winner Marilyn W. Thompson was editor of the Lexington Herald-Leader in Kentucky.
As Howard Kurtz reported [1] in October 2006, Thompson was in the middle of what one might call a pay for play hit piece against that state's leading Republican figure (emphasis added):
Kentucky's Lexington Herald-Leader yesterday launched an investigative series on Sen. Mitch McConnell pushing legislation for his affluent donors -- an effort originally paid for by a foundation that has financed several liberal groups that oppose the Republican lawmaker.
The paper's parent firm, McClatchy Co., decided last week to repay the $35,000 grant, which underwrote six months of salary and expenses for a Herald-Leader reporter on leave. The grant came from the respected Center for Investigative Reporting, which was passing on money provided by the St. Louis-based Deer Creek Foundation.
Deer Creek has funded a variety of liberal groups, including New York University law school's Brennan Center for Justice, which represented opponents of McConnell in a campaign-finance lawsuit that reached the Supreme Court.
"It's like the NRA funding a report about Sarah Brady," the gun-control advocate, says McConnell spokesman Don Stewart. "You've got to be somewhat leery about the objectivity."

McCain should ride this as long as he can.
McCain should actually be happy this piece of trash was published. The NYT and hillary are the great unifying forces for conservatives this year. The NYT is doings its partto help the cause. And when she steals the nomnation at the convention the democrats demise this year will be complete.
After Hillary loses the nomination, maybe Syd “Vicious” Blumenthal can get a reporter gig at the Times Enquirer. He should be available immediately following his drunk driving trial (arrested while she was campaiging in NH, but only reported a week after her “comeback”). Syd would make a fine addition to the Times reporting staff.
Isn’t working for the NYT evidence of a left-wing connection?
I guess since the NY Times is being objective and wanting to report all news on the candidate they will now put the story out about the guy claiming to have had gay sex with Obama in the back of his limo and snorted coke with him. This supposedly happened in 1999, around the same time McCain’s issue supposedly happened. In the interest of fairness, I think the NY Slimes should do the gay, cokehead limo driver piece also...
The gay cokehead limo driver piece is actually a better sourced story since one of the participants is claiming it actually happened.
McCain wasn’t my first choice, but he is giving a great speech here in Indianapolis as we “speak”. He is for making the tax cuts permanent, he is for staying in Iraq until the job is done, and he does want to cut our dependency for oil by trying to come up with our own solutions. He is also saying that he wants the borders secured and tamper-proof documents created for those temporary workers here in the U.S. Let’s be open minded and listen.
Did he rape a woman or not?
Did he have State Police bring victims to him?
Did this happen while he was married?
If there is a double standard - and the Times thinks it's because dems don't "pretend to be moral" then will they please put some of those office holders on the record - telling us that they don't believe in being faithful. I would like to hear that from the horses mouth...
CNN poll: Texans leaning toward McCain in NovemberStory Highlights
52 percent would vote for John McCain; 44 percent for Barack Obama
New York Sen. Hillary Clinton fares slightly worse, with 42 percent.

If there is a double standard - and the Times thinks it's because dems don't "pretend to be moral" then will they please put some of those (LIBERAL) office holders on the record - telling us that they don't believe in being faithful. I would like to hear that from the horses mouth...
AGENDA you question. Now who is the very Senator who became infamous penning the very legislation that gave these media whores power OVER elections.... Cry me a river, lord McCain benefits the most and NEVER had to spend one campaign raised dime.
What about the photos of Clintoon with his hand on the stew’s thigh?
Deer Creek has funded a variety of liberal groups, including New York University law school's Brennan Center for Justice...
If everything was on the up-and-up, why is so much money being laundered thru non-profits and foundations?
The next question to ask, of course, is where this Deer Creek Foundation gets its money.
Eventually, somewhere along the line, you're going to find either a.) a rich liberal or b.) a foreign government.
I wonder just how many non-profits are, in fact, covers for political activists. In which case, why are they treated like non-profits from a tax standpoint?
IF lord McCain reallllllly wants that tax cut made permanent then why is he NOT leading that charge in the SENATE NOW. He has demonstrated that he can ram liberal legislation against US though that unholy body... so where is his beeeeef.
Wow!
I'm sure you're right...
if you get the information to the New York Times they'll be on it like white on rice.
(Oh, wait - that story would make a dem look bad - they'll spike it for sure - ummmm, nevermind...)
Sex Scandal?
What "sex scandal"?
Give me names, dates, times, video, hotel receipts or a blue dress - otherwise shut the f@ck up accusing people of a "sex scandal" when all you have is anonymous sources claiming that they knew someone who thought there might have been "an appearance of impropriety"
That's not a "sex scandal" it's a poor attempt to create a rumor.
Oh? They covered this in excruciating detail already. Don’t you remember all the articles about how Ken Starr was conducting a witch hunt? How the Republicans were obsessed with a sex scandal between consenting (?) adults?
They ran these stories for weeks. I’m surprised you didn’t see them. ;-)
I know that Freepers will have some very good questions for them.
Here's the email address: askthetimes@nytimes.com.
New York Sen. Hillary Clinton fares slightly worse, with 42 percent.
Drive-by media reaction: It must be all those sexist rednecks that believe women should be barefoot and pregnant that would vote for McCain.
Wow!
I'm sure the New York Times will want that one too!
they'll be on it like white on rice.
... right about the time hell freezes over.
