Beginning next week, the paper will institute three changes intended to reduce printing costs without compromising newsgathering resources or news space.
On Sundays, the Insight and Books sections will be printed in tabloid size - the same dimensions as Sunday Datebook, also called the Pink.
Books will be inserted into Insight as a pullout section so readers can read or save both sections separately.
On Mondays and Tuesdays only, the Sports and Business sections will be combined, with Sports starting from the front and Business from the back.
The Classified section will be attached to the back of Datebook on those days. Columns by two popular Datebook writers - Jon Carroll and Leah Garchik - will move from the last page of Datebook to the second page every weekday.
Although the combinations will have no direct effect on the amount of newsprint required, . . .

Happy GayRonnicle woes ping
Just like the Incredible Shrinking Chicago Sun-Times.
“Although the combinations will have no direct effect on the amount of newsprint required, . . .”
To those stupid enough to believe the above, we have 3 bridges in the San Francisco Area for sale.
Of course the reality is: WGAS!
There must be less news happening these days. Or fewer advertisers filling out the pages.
without compromising newsgathering resources or news space any more than usual.
Then what's the point?...........
If they wanted to save money and increase circulation they should start printing it on 2-ply rolls with a cardboard tube in the middle and sell it in 4 or 8 packs. That is all it is good for.
Much like the “First Citiwide Change Bank”, they make for it in volume.
I was on the verge is discontinuing my Chronicle habit when they introduced sudoku a couple of years ago. That got another 12-18 months out of me. Now the Examiner (which is free) has a great puzzle page including the same sudoku as is in the Chronicle so I buy the Chron no more than once a week or so.
On Sunday, Monday and Tuesday we will not use any ink.
On Wednesday and Thursday we will use invisible ink.
On Friday and Saturday we will use a white ink that is based on an old goat milk recipe.
In the old days, the SF Chronicle had superb columnists like Herb Caen, Stanton Delaplane, Art Hoppe, and Charles McCabe, and advertisers paid a premium to have their ads on a columnist’s page.
I can’t figure out why they have not nurtured a fresh crop of columnists.
..any real news, or is it just the gay cr@p?
