For all your skepticism, and I guess you are refering to the 'link' to the Mammoth Caldera, there is a considerable volume of seismic history that does not show the inferred linkage to exist. Can you tell me the motion mechanism for today's quake? Can you tell me the tectonic setting at Mammoth or Wells? Yeh, geologists may not know everything, but we know enough to look at events like this with a level head and not going Y2K with it.
Probably a layout grid of drill pads for some type of exploration (anything from mineral to geothermal evaluation).
Most of Nevada’s seismicity is around the Sierra Nevada. That region gets several 4.0 or less earthquakes a year. The northeast part of the state rarely sees a quake. A 6.0 in the northeast is a rare event.
LOL.
I do recall some incredulous reactions of geologists a year or several years ago . . . I forget the specifics . . . some quake or eruption which registered a shocking correlation with measurements in a region construed to have no connection to the triggering region.
I just expect a LOT more of that.
I’m convinced that God is seriously going to communicate to all Creation how puny our vaunted knowledge of reality is.
The facade of an old building along the main street in Wells, Nevada collapsed.
On your way through Northern Nevada, you may want to stop and see the Ruby Mountains near Elko. Maybe go hiking. Hardly “nothing” as you might say.
You may be refering to effects on the geothermal features at Yellowstone to a major quake in Alaska. Even before that it was known that the geothermal plumbing at the park was sensitive to seismic disturbances. That, however is completely different from triggering an eruption at Yellowstone.
Dude, I am trying to keep them a secret.
You are correct. Poor choice of words.
But please don't pass through to Idaho!
Good Map, I used to have a great map that showed all the fault lines in the US. Do you know where I could find one like that again, thanks
Are those photos in Wells?
Thanks for the pics!
It’s quiet here ... Too Quiet ...
Thanks for the images. Wow brings back memories to me of the Northridge but of course we have wider spread and much more extensive damage.
Thanks for letting us know. Hope all the folks there are ok. I haven’t had time to follow the story very close today.
I felt this earthquake when I was working in Layton, UT this morning. It was weird. At first I thought a co-worker was messing with me by kicking my chair, then I decided that maybe I’m just tired and getting a little light-headed.
It wasn’t a real fast vibration, it was more like a car hitting smooth bumps at about 10 MPH. It lasted about 15 seconds. Then people started asking each other, “What was that, did we just have an earthquake?” A quick perusal of the internet showed what really happened.
You mean that earthquakes can cross state borders? Is that taxable interstate commerce?
I was right! It WAS too quiet!
Just had us a pretty good aftershock — 4.6 and very sharp.
