I get the impression that McCain thought they really liked him. It’s only my impression, but he should have learned that lesson long ago.

From TIME:

February 20, 2008 11:52
McCain Senior Adviser Responds to Times Story (Says it is all Nonsense)

***********************EXCERPT*******************

Mark Salter, John McCain's obstreperous senior aide, just responded to Time's query about the New York Times's long-simmering McCain-mixed-up-with-lobbyists story.

Speaking from a parking garage in Toledo, where the campaign is overnighting, Salter vehemently denied any improper relationship between the lobbyist singled out in the piece and the senator. He also attempted to cast doubt on both the story and the newspaper's reasons for running it. The bulk of the story's more titillating accusations, he said, stemmed from "two blind quotes....Are these the standards of the New York Times? No. They are the standards of the National Enquirer."

Actually they are the standards of the NY Times when it comes to Republicans. The Enquirer has slightly higher standards.

It`s all over for Hillary, and now it`s all over for McCain. The media won`t let up and will force McCain to concentrate on this all the way to November. Best get ready for a Mr. Empty Suit (Obama) President.

This is just the start of it. McCain’s romance with the MSM is about to end. No one should be surprised. Since before 2000 the media realized that in McCain they had someone they could use to hurt Bush and Republicans. The payoff for McCain was all the attention and free publicity that finally got him to where he is now. Even McCain had to know that he was going to get stabbed in the back as surely as he has been stabbing Republicans in the back. That’s politics. McCain’s crew has had more than eight years to figure out how to deal with this. Let’s see how good they are.

Once a whore always a whore.

As the most liberal republican candidate Johnny Mc was happy to be in bed with the liberal media when they used each other to knock out conservatives in the primaries.

Now he is being used to help knock out the challenger to the most liberal democrat. He should just lay back and enjoy it.

Maybe he thought they really liked him this time.
This should clear up that little misunderstanding.

If they are throwing this old dirt this early in the game it means they have stronger stuff they are holding on to for release at the most opportune time.

He can twist in the wind for all I care.

Yep. Can you say "Keating 5".

McCain will wind up making the GOP wish for the good old days when Bob Dole was its candidate.

Bet the FBI is already all over this because of the funding.

Certain to come out about influence peddling.

Whoa, I bet those “repeated confrontations” by staffers, sent him into apoplectic fits of Titanic proportions. We’ll probably hear about those “confrontations” next, when he throws one of said “staffers” through a 9th floor window!

The “best stuff” is probably being saved for the Sunday before election Tuesday.

McCain has plenty of baggage to fuel the NYSlimes—and every other paper in the country!

I think you are absolutely right. The “affair” part was not what raised the hair on the back of my neck, either. The implications of consorting that closely with a lobbyist, any lobbyist, is a deal killer. One only need remember “Abramoff”-—for Republicans anyway.

Not that I am a fan of McVains - however in my opinion this old and unsupported hit piece by the NY Slime will end up working to his net advantage...

32 year old “hottie” has major crush on the elder McCain - sex sells --- at least with a significant percent of the voting shepple
