For McCain, Self-Confidence on Ethics Poses Its Own Risk [McCain had an affair?]
New York Times ^ | February 21, 2008 | JIM RUTENBERG, MARILYN W. THOMPSON, DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK and STEPHEN LABATON

Early in Senator John McCain’s first run for the White House eight years ago, waves of anxiety swept through his small circle of advisers.

A female lobbyist had been turning up with him at fund-raisers, in his offices and aboard a client’s corporate jet. Convinced the relationship had become romantic, some of his top advisers intervened to protect the candidate from himself — instructing staff members to block the woman’s access, privately warning her away and repeatedly confronting him, several people involved in the campaign said on the condition of anonymity.

When news organizations reported that Mr. McCain had written letters to government regulators on behalf of the lobbyist’s clients, the former campaign associates said, some aides feared for a time that attention would fall on her involvement.

Mr. McCain, 71, and the lobbyist, Vicki Iseman, 40, both say they never had a romantic relationship.

Hate McCain? H E L L O ... who started the ‘hate’ business. I am tired of turning my cheek to lord McCain every time he does not get his way. Strange how some people like to jump in the middle of a clean stream and muddy up the water.

Given that lord McCain got the NYTimes to hold off on this story, you do not even consider that he gave them the ‘green’ light to dump. I do not put ANYTHING past lord McCain and his media whores.

I don’t believe this mularky. There is no evidence. Remember, they accused George H. Bush of having an affair and that was debunked.

And for heaven’s sakes, they accused Nancy Reagan of having an affair with Frank Sinatra - total balderdash!

“Poor Charlie.”

Can you imagine if McCain picked somebody like Charlie Crist, or someone comparable, for VP, and THAT person also became VP, because people who are very, very stupid are allowed to vote.

We could have RINO presidents indefinitely.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaah!!

McCain has always been a tenacious warrior, but ultimately, he falls short as the conservative bellwether. Hopefully, theres some position in the party for him to utilize his talents. He would be a far greater asset as a VP IMO. Every president needs an effective attack dog now and again.

Bob Bennett’s Bill’s brother. He was somebody’s counsel during the Bubba administration. Bill Bennett is the conservative, not Bob.

I meant to say “and THAT person also became PRESIDENT,”

This is an unsubstantiated rumor from eight years ago?

Maybe they are waiting for McCain to deny it so they can bring out the pictures?

Maybe they are trying to goad McCain until he loses his composure.

This is clearly not a news story, it's a brazen hit piece by the most repugnant of news papers.

I fought McCain for twenty-five years. Put me in the same room with him and you will see sparks. I don’t like him personally but as I look to the future and the possible challanges and the qualities needed to meet those challenges, I see those in John McCain. I will eat crow every day he is in the White House but I will not let my personal animosities go against the well-being of the Republic.

McCain campaign response:

“It is a shame that the New York Times has lowered its standards to engage in a hit and run smear campaign...

They screwed this up from the very first phrase by suggesting that the NYT has standards that could be lowered.

McCain must now step aside, and Romney needs to get back in.

I see a lot of people speculating on that scenario on this thread.

So it was Romney that leaked it, not Huckabee or oh-so-finally-proud Michelle Obomber?

Robert Bennett said on H&C that NYT was pressured by New Republic to run the story.

LOL. Robert Bennett: Clinton's attorney in the Lewinsky affair. Perfect. And the brother of McCain pal Bill Bennett, to boot!

Echostar and Cablevision were both big contributors (along with Tides Foundation and George Soros) to McCain's "Reform Institute."

And the Republicans after promising not to?

Same end result.

Paxson used to own home shopping network. I think Paxson may be a Floridian. If so, what do you bet he knows Governor Suntan?
