SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- After years of declining sales, The Sharper Image -- known for creature comforts and gadgets like robotic massage chairs and $170 toothbrushes -- has gone belly-up, declaring bankruptcy Wednesday. In a brief statement, Sharper Image (SHRP:
SHRP 0.41, -1.03, -71.5%) announced it had filed for Chapter 11 protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, but that it "intends to continue to conduct business as usual while it devotes renewed efforts to resolve its operational and liquidity problems and develops a reorganization plan."

I have one of those chairs, it vibrates in different zones, has rollers for back massage, has a stereo in one of the arms. It’s over 15 years old now and everything still works. Better investment than some others we made in those days.

I had never EVER seen anyone ever buy anything at their store. I always wondered if catalog sales were that good...Now I have my answer.

SkyMall - LOL. I saw a lovely HD-DVD player advertised in there for the low low price of $899 when I flew to Houston on Monday. The format is dead, and there are HD-DVD players to be found for < $150 all over the place now.
Actually had a good time laughing as I walked thru the Sharper Image at the Galleria in Houston yesterday. The asking prices for their items had me in stitches.

That bogus air-cleaner with all the infomercials did them in. Didn’t work. Even worse it actually put harmful ozone into the room.

Real men grab and pull. You can lose a trailer hitch that way. I like to sort of train mine into a very attractive little mustache. Alternatively, braids and beads give it that nice contemporary look.

That CEO Richard Thayler always seemed like a nice guy with his daughter appearing in those commercials and all . . .
