COTTONWOOD, Minn. —

Authorities say four students have been killed in a school bus crash in southwestern Minnesota. Minnesota State Patrol Lieutenant Mark Peterson says the students died when their Lakeview School bus was hit by a van this afternoon on a highway near Cottonwood, about 2 hours southwest of Minneapolis. The bus then collided with a pickup and tipped on its side.

The victims weren't immediately identified, and their ages weren't immediately given.

At least 14 people were hurt. The school bus was carrying 40 people at the time.

The Marshall Independent reported that the first motorists on the scene were asked to take some children to the hospital.

"I parked my car and called 911, and ran to the school bus and the driver was handing kids out the door as fast as I could take them," Karen Mahlum told the newspaper.

Other motorists also stopped and took kids from the driver. "You just wanted to make sure it was safe," she said. "They were screaming and screaming on the bus. There were so many kids."

What power do they have in regard to private school transport?

Were these poor students from a private school or a public school?

Not that it matters. Many private schools use the same buses that the public schools use because one bus company will contract with all of them.

Again, the NEA is only part of the problem, but it is part of it. You ask, "What power would the NEA have over private school transport?" At first blush, it may sound ridiculous that a public school teachers' union would have any influence at all over private school transport. But then, remember, that the NEA exerts powerful influence over the public schools. Let's face it - the NEA runs the public schools. ;-) And, because the public schools behave like a monopoly, everything throughout the education industry - curriculum, cost, transportation, etc. - is affected.

So, the NEA has power over issues that, at first blush, would seem to have nothing to do with teachers teaching in public schools. Issues like homosexual "marriage" and homeschooling come to mind. Yet, the NEA will lobby for/against legislation on those issues. And, because its members are educating most of the children in this country, the NEA has tremendous influence over voters and legislators.

Here's the link that was on #7: Click here. The NEA is against seat belts on schoolbuses. So there it is. They could very easily vote to oppose the NHTSA and exert some pressure on the transportation industry. But they won't.

Again, should the NEA alone bear the blame? I say, No. No one even knows yet if seat belts would've prevented the tragedy in this story. But, considering this union's power and position, it's part of the reason why schoolbuses aren't equipped with seat belts.

Still haven’t heard anything on the cause of the crash, or the condition of the woman driving the minivan.

Were these poor students from a private school or a public school?

That does not answer the question posed: What power do they have in regard to private school transport?

Not that it matters.

Yes, it does matter.

Many private schools use the same buses that the public schools use because one bus company will contract with all of them.

In some areas that may be true. Where I live it is not true, and the schools around here cross state lines. The public schools own the buses they use, as do the private schools. They are not contracted to a bus company.

At first blush, it may sound ridiculous that a public school teachers' union would have any influence at all over private school transport. But then, remember, that the NEA exerts powerful influence over the public schools. Let's face it - the NEA runs the public schools. ;-) And, because the public schools behave like a monopoly, everything throughout the education industry - curriculum, cost, transportation, etc. - is affected.

There is no public school teacher's union in Virginia. Therefore the NEA does not run the public schools here.

Does the NEA have so much control that ALL public transit does not have seatbelts because they may oppose them on schoolbuses?

Invoking the NEA here remains a red herring.

On that note I must depart this discussion, not for any other reason than I cook at the local Moose Lodge on Wednesday nights and have to be ther in 20 minutes. I will check back when I return.

What are you talking about? I never said that.

Btw, as it turns out, there were no seat belts on that bus. Apparently, attempts to pass seat belt requirements in MN failed: Click

Gabby,

I am skiing in the Rockies this week. After 20 runs down single and double black diamonds, I am not thinking about you and your questions.

Imagine that! My world does **not** revolve around you.

I’m betting money the cause of the accident was another illegal immigrant with no license or insurance...

just a hunch...

Can you explain to me why the NEA should oppose the NHTSA? Does the NEA have experts the NHSTA does not? Does the NEA have the ability to conduct safety tests more detailed than the NHSTA?

It seems to me that folks without expertise are tossing in their opinion just because it SOUNDS good to have seat belts on buses, therefore we SHOULD have seat belts on buses.

Conservatives are better than that. We need to ask for definitive proof from those who have the expertise and then demand that our schools follow those recommendations, instead of going on how we FEEL.

BINGO!!!!!!!BOB!!!!!!!!!!

“Van driver does not have license”

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has uncovered information on the driver of the van that hit the school bus.

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has learned through state license records and state staff that the driver of the van does not have a valid driver’s license.

Alianiss Morales, of Motevideo, was convicted of driving without a license two years ago, according to police and Chippewa County Court administration staff.

Morales was pulled over, according to the clerk of court’s office, after a report of an an erratic driver. The officer found she was driving in Motevideo without a license.

The Minnesota State Patrol will be working with the National Transportation Safety Board to try and determine a cause for the crash. Investigators have been at the scene Wednesday and they plan to inspect all the vehicles involved and conduct interviews with students who were on the bus.

Morales, 23, remains at the hospital.

Two brothers and the daughter of a teacher were among four children killed in Minnesota’s worst school bus crash in at least two decades.

The fourth victim was the son of a former teacher at Lakeview School, the small southwestern Minnesota school wracked by the crash.............

I do not believe so.

You see, you are the one that threw in the red herring of the NEA, and refuse to answer the question I posed.

You are such a farce that you could actually be dangerous, if you weren't so comical.

(Sitting here laughing!) What am I supposed to do? Am I to insist that I am not a farce, that I am not dangerous, or comical? :-)
