Madison Wisconsin
Roughly 600 people gathered at the Capitol Theater in Madison's downtown Overture Center yesterday to listen to Michelle Obama make a pitch for her husband's presidential bid. They were treated to a revealing glimpse into the mind of the candidate's wife.
By now one passage from her speech has received much attention. She said:
For the first time in my adult lifetime, I'm proud of my country. And not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change. And I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction. And just not feeling so alone in my frustration and disappointment I've seen people who are hungry to be unified around some basic, common issues and it's made me proud.
It was an extraordinary declaration for a 44-year-old woman. She expanded on it a bit later, claiming that "Life for regular folks has gotten worse over the course of my lifetime, through Republican and Democratic administrations. It hasn't gotten much better."
Do these comments provide a glimpse of her general political worldview--one that is surprisingly critical of America for the wife of a presidential candidate? Or do they suggest a certain narcissism about the Obamas and their view of themselves? Or both?

***For the first time in my adult lifetime, I’m proud of my country.***
The MSM has tried to insert the word “really” in front of proud to mitigate what she really meant.
Now all my life I have confronted people who had a certain expectation of me. Every step of the way, there was somebody there telling me what I couldn't do. Applied to Princeton. "You can't go there, your test scores aren't high enough." I went. I graduated with departmental honors. And then I wanted to go to Harvard. And that was probably a little too tough for me. I didn't even know why they said that.
Hey Michelle, at least be proud that "Affirmative Action" is alive and well in this country that you revile.
Bill and Hillary were among the worst offenders. Many here at FR must be giving them a pass, 'cuz they have no problem with more democrats in the White House.
Some of the things she says are just plain baloney.
For one thing, it’s absurd for her to criticize No Child Left Behind on the one hand and then talk about little black girls being the target of low expectations.
Who does she think those left-behind children are that the NCLB program is designed for? Not PC, but they’re black and poor and struggling in school, and the enforced testing of NCLB of which she is so critical is identifying them and putting them in special tutoring programs so that the rest of us don’t have to support their illiterate selves when they reach adulthood.
As for her scores not being high enough to get into Harvard — she obviously benefited from affirmative action and racial quotas.
In other words, she and those poor little children she’s using as examples have both been recipients of America’s care and largesse.
Shut up, woman, and be grateful.
Considering some of the people Obama’s garnering, bad comment. On par with Bill Clinton’s comment about Jesse Jackson. (For Obama, moderates and independents; for Clinton, ‘blacks.’)
Stop attacking Obama! He’s going to fix our souls.
That’s one thing that left wingers NEVER are - grateful.
Maybe that’s why they’re always so angry.
The thankful heart is a happy heart.
You got that right.
I’d be embarrassed to say that I was admitted to a university even though my test scores weren’t high enough. Also, I wonder how she graduated with “departmental honors,” or maybe that was just handed to her as well....
Honestly, if I could go back 30 years, I’d put a different race on all of my admission forms.
Well, at least you know she was being honest. Like all leftists they truly hate the America that is. They only love the America they wish to build. I’m certain that the hysterical adulation that is being heaped on her husband is the first time that she’s been proud of her country, because it validates her own views of what America should be. These people are 180 degrees from what we need. I’ll take John McCain 6 ways from Sunday over this leftist crap.
Could someone explain to me just what kind of soul it takes to support partial birth abortion and allow aborted by alive babies to starve to death as her husband did while in the Illinois legislature?
Is there a clip of it any where?
She wasn’t proud of that sweatheart real estate deal she and the B.Man got in Chicago?
She doesn't deserve to be first lady with that kind of attitude towards her own country.
The one on FOX says “really”...
But it’s hardly a qualifier. What we’ve learned is the depth of her contempt for her country.
Spent way too many years in academia and very large companies watching ‘Affirmative Action’ and ‘diversity’ quotas and ‘feminism’ promote and advance unqualified and marginally qualified individuals to jobs they couldn’t handle. Michelle is just one of a long line of individuals where this resulted in ‘delusions of adequacy’.
To Michelle: Don’t worry honey, racial quotas and affirmative action got both you and your husband a nice ride to the top - you aren’t going to fall off the gravy train any time soon.
