Fidel Castro Steps Down...
You’re obviously more informed than I am. I was being facetious when I said “grandma”.
Sorry I misled you.
I saw that post. Hilarious.
I have to admit, I am surprised at the number of DUmmies who harbor no warm fuzzy feelings for El Comandante. I think the true-pink socialists are shocked at the level of animus toward one of their most revered icons, coming from other liberal DUmmies.
I don't speak Spanish, so post 70 is of no use to me. The link in post 73 won't load, probably because the server is being hammered as the news gets around.
I have to trust the folks who can translate and who have a presence on the ground to relay the news. No single source, of course -- but when there's a preponderance of sources, that's the way I lean.
I agree with your comments.
Can you imagine the flood of investment dollars into Cuba if it opened up. Wow.
I would sure hope that people had the common sense to refurbish what is there now, and build in new open locations.
There’s a history to be preserved down there.
No apology necessary. If anything, I owe you an apology for missing the joke. Anything my Grandma says is good enough for me.
Combining humor and intense political discussion is a mess. The subtleties that make language so much fun sort of skitter by unnoticed.
last time he stepped down, he broke his arm falling off the step he was stepping down from.
All this is is “Weekend’s at Fidels.”
You’re not missing much by not reading the Spanish original. As always, Fidel’s a verbose little windbag, and it takes him several paragraphs to come to the point:
...les comunico que no aspiraré ni aceptaré- repito- no aspiraré ni aceptaré, el cargo de Presidente del Consejo de Estado y Comandante en Jefe.
[I communicate to you that I will not seek nor will I acceptI repeat: I will not seek nor will I accept the position of President of the Congress and Commander in Chief.]
That comes right from the official Granma Cuban propaganda site. The link in 73 will just get you what I posted in 70.
Agreed! (but somebody's gotta do it) ;)
1984.
The DUmmies mourn that the Jefe of La Revolución still has more to accomplish, after 50 years:
“Fidel is the kind of personality that would want to stay in power if he could. Not because of a lust for power for it’s own sake...but because he will forever see his work as unfinished. “
How about: someone who suggests that a man who gets down on his knees before his Creator and swears eternal devotion to the woman he professes to love should spit in his Creator's face and ignominiously cast off that woman because she professes to be uncomfortable with firearms?
You probably haven't read Hardy's "Tess of the d'Urbervilles," but if you have, you've probably already plumed yourself on the modern sensibilities that wouldn't allow a man to leave his wife because she had suffered a moral lapse in the years before their marriage and not informed him of it for fear of losing him. We've come a long way since those benighted days, haven't we?
I think Fido has either died or is closer than he’s been in months.
Can you imagine the planeloads of Classic car buffs heading down there with wads of cash and gleams in their eyes?
Investment? Heck, for all the nasty things said about him, and deservedly so, Castro’s Cuba does have a very high literacy rate and a lot of smart people.
Whether or not it will be allowed to happen... We’ll just have to wait and see.
They will search high and low amongst the folk of egalitarian Cuba to find the best in all the land to replace Castro:
His brother.
I do not take my leave of you. I only desire now to fight as a soldier of ideas. I will keep writing under the title "Reflections of Comrade Fidel." It will be one more weapon available in the arsenal. Perhaps my voice will be heard. I will be careful.
With emphasis!
Well if Castro hates McCain, then McCain just jumped up quite a few notches in my estimation.
Of course, that's just "Godspeak." He doesn't listen very well unless you couch it in those terms. In fact, Latin is the preferred medium, and the more voices that repeat the prayer, the more likely He is to take notice, being somewhat hard of hearing. But in plain English, one would simply hope that Castro gets what he deserves.
How about this, instead:
Come Holy Spirit. Work in his heart to truly repent of his blasphemies against You and Your Church. May he feel true sorrow for the evils he has done to the Cuban people, as well as those who lived in or were impacted by countries where he exported his influence. May he taste that remorse and truly repent of his sins prior to his death.
Remember Our Savior's teaching: (Mt 5:44) Love your enemies: do good to them that hate you: and pray for them that persecute and calumniate you:
Remember St. Paul's teaching, expanding on the above (Rom 12:14-21): Bless them that persecute you: bless, and curse not. Rejoice with them that rejoice: weep with them that weep. Being of one mind one towards another. Not minding high things, but consenting to the humble. Be not wise in your own conceits. To no man rendering evil for evil. Providing good things, not only in the sight of God but also in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as is in you, have peace with all men. Revenge not yourselves, my dearly beloved; but give place unto wrath, for it is written: Revenge is mine, I will repay, saith the Lord. But if the enemy be hungry, give him to eat; if he thirst, give him to drink. For, doing this, thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head. Be not overcome by evil: but overcome evil by good.
It's easy to repeat the words in a church surrounded by friends, it's a little more difficult actually doing so in practice.
Do they have their little fingers in other nations like they used to? It was my understanding that their ability to project outside their borders pretty much ceased when the USSR rubles dried up.
I don’t necessarily disagree with your overall take on this. It quite likely could get worse before better.
