McCain: "Winning in the fall will be 'uphill battle' (just what we needed to hear...)

** EXCERPT **

(CNN) — Likely GOP nominee John McCain said Sunday that beating an energized Democratic party in a fall election fight would be “an uphill battle all the way.”

The Arizona senator told George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s This Week that he “can out-campaign them, and I can out-debate them, and I can out-perform them” but conceded that he had his work cut out for him in the months ahead.

“…We've got to reunite the party, and we've got to re-energize the party. And I'm prepared to do that. We've got plenty of time. But I won't waste a day,” said McCain.

The Arizona senator, who is close to capturing the number of delegates required to claim the Republican nomination, has struggled to win over much of the GOP’s conservative base. But party leaders have begun to rally to his side: Monday, he is scheduled to receive the endorsement of former President George H.W. Bush.

Agreed, Obama is practically president already. Now, what do you intend to do about it? Have a parade, or try and stop him?

Ughh, I hate those lights. They cost way too much, they flicker and carry risk of siezures for some people, and the color temperature is way too cool for me.

Agreed. Nixon would have won Nam if the Dems hadn't destroyed him over watergate. Was he a Goldwater conservative on the home front? No, he famously said "we are all Keynesians now" and took us off gold. But millions of innocent human beings died horribly when the left broke him, who wouldn't have had he stayed in office.

Was McCain asked if he still supports a “pathway to citizenship” and would he
sign legislation containing Z visas or their equivalent? I doubt that he was asked but I didn’t watch the show and would like to know.

Your man McCain is not going to win this election-—tough. Try George Voinovich next time.

Oh yes, it is false consciousness and actually conservatives have won every national election in a landslide since voting was invented, except when they didn't show up, which is... oh yeah, every national election since Calvin Coolidge, other than 1980 and 1984.

“And didn’t you know? He was in Vietnam.”

Hey, now. Don’t compare McCain’s MOH to Kerry’s bogus “I’m a hero” crap. McCain may be a lot of distasteful things, but a phony hero is NOT one of them.

His politics suck, he’s a RINO deluxe, but he is a genuine war hero.

GEE—McCain is just full of HOPE!

Is that what he's full of? I could have swore it was something else!

“For the first time in my adult life, I see a black future no matter what happens.”

The first time? Where were you in ‘96? Thrilled over a certain victory by Dole?

How about ‘92? Happy over the impending defeat of Bill Clinton by the uber-conservative GHW Bush?

C’mon, it’s not the first time it’s been a Hobson’s choice... it usually is, Ronaldus Magnus notwithstanding.

“McCain’s candidacy was DOA just a couple of months ago. Who resurrected it?”

That’s a very good question, and one that should be asked more often.

I said nothing about Kerry. McCain's supporters just keep crowing that he was there and it’s totally irrelevant to current events. I don’t care what he did 40 years ago. Now he’s unfit for the office.

The problem for McCain and Hillary is that they are both too old to attract and excite the younger voter. The Obama supporter has, to paraphrase Timothy Leary, tuned in (to their Ipods) and turned off to the rantings of the Baby Boomer plus generation, and they are refusing to wait in the wings any longer, while the Baby Boomers take encore after encore.

Kemp’s answer was......John is a proud man.

Pride as much as anything is his worst enemy in this election.

If he doesn’t swallow some of it soon and bring back the base he going down hard.

“I’m voting for him, because he is at least a hawk.”

A hawk? He wants to close Gitmo, stop waterboarding, give terrorists court trials... ok, he’s better than the alternative, but don’t act like he’s a real hawk. He’s more like a hawk/dove hybrid.

Just because he’s the only one who isn’t going to surrender, doesn’t mean he’s a true terror warrior.

Didn’t a bunch of Republicans vote for him? Isn’t that why he’s the nominee?

“I don’t care what he did 40 years ago. Now he’s unfit for the office.”

Ok, but you used the same slight that was used, and rightly so, against Kerry, who blew his own horn every chance he got, over his bogus “hero” status.

Maybe you didn’t intend to compare him to that Rat bast**rd, but it came off that way.

And yes, in other ways you CAN compare him to Kerry. I’m not a fool, and not fooled by McCain, but I do genuinely respect his naval service, and his heroism.
