McCain: "Winning in the fall will be 'uphill battle' (just what we needed to hear...)

** EXCERPT **

(CNN) — Likely GOP nominee John McCain said Sunday that beating an energized Democratic party in a fall election fight would be “an uphill battle all the way.”

The Arizona senator told George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s This Week that he “can out-campaign them, and I can out-debate them, and I can out-perform them” but conceded that he had his work cut out for him in the months ahead.

“…We've got to reunite the party, and we've got to re-energize the party. And I'm prepared to do that. We've got plenty of time. But I won't waste a day,” said McCain.

The Arizona senator, who is close to capturing the number of delegates required to claim the Republican nomination, has struggled to win over much of the GOP’s conservative base. But party leaders have begun to rally to his side: Monday, he is scheduled to receive the endorsement of former President George H.W. Bush.

McCain: "Winning in the fall will be 'uphill battle'

Then why are you running?

Why are you the likely nominee?

What concerns me is when Son of Cain talks about reaching “across” and winning CONSERVATIVES within the party.

Just lean back, John McCain, and wait for assistance.

This is about as smart as his statement that the economy isn’t his strong suit. Sometimes, there can be a little too much “straight talk.”

"We've got to reunite the party, and we've got to re-energize the party..."

The party is united, John. It's against amnesty and free services for illegals, against McCain-Feingold, against gun-grabbers, and against embryonic stem cell research. And the best you have to offer us is patronizing tripe while you snuggle with the Democrats.

I am not sure what you are getting at with your commentary. Should he be saying “Winning in the fall will be a ‘walk in the park’”? Would that help to energize the party?

We've got plenty of time. But I won't waste a day,” said McCain.

Why not? You wasted 25 years bashing conservatives and ripping the GOP asunder in public with liberal accomplices, what's a few more days? (oh, that's right, he needs to unify the party). Give me a break.

Would you be any more impressed if he said winning the election would be a piece of cake?

The reality is, there’s only been a handful of examples where a party has held on to the White House for three consecutive terms - the last was twenty years ago, when Bush 41 followed Reagan, an extremely popular president. McCain has to follow George W. Bush, who’s ratings aren’t exactly sky high.

This might work out better than the candidate of inevitability. Of course there is the worry this will be an excuse for not working hard enough to energize the conservative vote.

McCain: "Winning in the fall will be 'uphill battle'

Trying to rally the troops. I don't think he has it in him. Besides, the troops have been abandoned. Why should they rally back?

Don’t forget the old “There is no other choice, so hold your nose and vote for McCain like a good little Republican.”

Too bad the GOP can’t find a World War I vet to run.

I guess McCain is the closest they could come.

If John McCain said the sky is blue, many Freepers would attack him for it.

Of course it’s going to be an uphill battle in November, we face high inflation and a slowing economy, after a 2-term incumbent.

He’s not saying anything untrue, yet he gets attacked here as usual.
