Here's an example of how schools should be treating diversity in their schools. Perhaps this kind of example can help prevent incidents like the murder that happened in Oxnard, California.
CNN interviews Kim Pearson of Trans Youth Family Advocates about an eight-year-old transgender-identified child who is returning to a school in Douglas County, Colorado that has adjusted its facilities and teaching environment to accommodate her.
According to CNN, two unisex bathrooms have been provided for the student, teachers will call the student by her name, parents and teachers will get info on transgender people, and officials will be made available for questions.
The school released this statement: "We continue to be focused on providing a positive learning environment for this student and all students in the class and school that is free from harassment. As with many other students, this particular student brings a diverse set of circumstances to the school setting."

Ping for later response.
Actually its COLORADO.
The first line references in killing in Oxnard, California while the story is about a school in Colorado.
Of course you should encourage him, and not repress his self-chosen species identity. /s However, there’s a significant chance that if you encourage this, when he grows up he’ll end up in the Air Force, with an aeronautical, aerospace, or mechanical engineering degree, and he’ll still have a deep emotional attachment to his voice-changing Optimus Prime helmet.
Because sex and gender are two separate things. We know our genders from birth, which is why even very young boys and girls act so differently. It's actually pretty typical for a transgender condition to manifest itself in early childhood.
So?
One of my classmates (1970’s) was born w/o a penis. He was a guy genetically, but had no penis.
He was always given private dressing and bathroom facilities. Otherwise, no special treatment.
I guess I’m having trouble seeing the problem in accommodating that 1 out of a million who really do have serious biological gender issues.
When I told his teacher what he had said, she said she had to watch him on the playground because he would slip into the building and put on the women's clothes--meant for little girls, of course-- in the play area. She said the kid's father was a big redneck and would probably kill the little boy when he found out the kid's problem.
If I had not known this little boy, I would think kids didn't know about such things. The thing is, they don't know yet there is anything "wrong" with the way they feel.
I have wondered whatever happened to that little kid.
I don't think anybody expressing opinions here has any expertise in knowing anything about the subject. I know I don't!

The Marxist government school administrators **know** full well what they are doing. The goal here is complete destruction of the Judeo Christian culture upon which all freedom rests. If they succeed we a looking a 1,000 Dark Age. Unfortunately, they have armies of not too bright teachers willing to help them.
They also have a cadre of simpleton Christian teachers who think that by selling out their principles for a paycheck they can sprinkle a little “salt and light” around in the schools.
Just for consideration... how about this child being a hermaphrodite? There are quite a lot of variations on this condition, not to mention that exterior genitalia being male, child assigned male sex at birth, but actually having interior genitalia as female and possibly having hormonal identity as female [or vice versa]. 8 years of age seems to be an age where sexual identity starts to be confusing for these children and then gets rather intense with puberty.
I’m not sure what the chromosomal identity means in these cases. Mostly it’s pretty darned sad for those with this gender mess. From some accounts that I’ve read, most people would prefer transgendered to hermaphrodite because it’s actually less of a stigma.
How is this NOT child abuse? An 8 year old would have to be pretty hypersexualized to really be aware of their gender in more than a “plumbing” kind of way. That doesn’t just happen.
When I was 8, I wanted to be Zorro. Fortunately, my parents, the “media” and the school officials didn’t do much in the way of encouraging me. LOL!!!
If you still shoot you can be extremely popular with some FReeper guys!
OK, so I never gave that up.:)
Whoa! You are absolutely correct. I guess I’m jaded by all the California libs who are fouling the pond here in Arizona.
The parent may be transgender-identified , but an eight-year-old child ?
“Wong confirmed “mental health professionals” would be provided for other students, staff or parents if there are “any concerns at all.”
There’s your answer boys and girls. If you question this in any way, you are the one with the mental problems...
“How is this NOT child abuse?”
How is this not child abuse for the normal children who are brain-washed by the school into accepting this mentally ill child as “normal”? This will certainly confuse children who don’t understand such bizarre conditions in our evil world, and may give them serious issues themselves.
As I've said on another thread, I think this kid is in for a really rough time and will be quite messed up very soon. The kids will be merciless in middle school. No one will hang out with him/her. What if he/she decides to be a cheerleader? I can't wait to see that. They will have to build an other-sex locker room too. I think this kid will be a high risk for suicide before high school.
These parents are doing the kid no favors. If the kid does end it all because he/she can't take it anymore, the parents will probably blame intolerant conservatives.
Who'da thunk that we would see drag tweens in our lifetime?
The parents of this poor kid were Penecostals and the dad was redneck supreme. The kid didn't stand a chance! The teachers were afraid to approach the parents about counseling because of the father--feared he might abuse the child...who was a sweet little boy.
Any adult who belittles any child is, IMO, an immature, insecure jerk! (not calling U one)
