Top Clinton Adviser Says Superdelegates Will Decide Election, Obama's Victories 'Irrelevant'
Saturday , February 16, 2008
A top Hillary Clinton adviser on Saturday boldly predicted his candidate would lock down the nomination before the August convention by definitively winning over party insiders and officials known as superdelegates, claiming the number of state elections won by rival Barack Obama would be "irrelevant" to their decision.
The claims no doubt will escalate the war of words between the campaigns, as Obama continues to argue superdelegates should vote the way of their districts. But the special class of delegates, which make up about 20 percent of the total delegate haul, are not bound to vote the way of their states and districts, as pledged delegates are.
Obama leads handily in the pledged delegate count and has won more states but trails Clinton in superdelegates, making them potential and controversial deadlock-breakers if the race ends up a dead heat come convention time.
Harold Ickes, a 40-year party operative charged with winning over superdelegates for the Clinton campaign, made no apologies on Saturday for the campaign's convention strategy.
"We're going to win this nomination," Ickes said, adding that they would do so soon after the last contest on June 7 in Puerto Rico. "You're not going to see this go to the convention floor."

Obama has no integrity. He is laying low and letting Hillary destroy herself. The man is very very devious and I fear the main stream public is falling for it.
Hmm. A Yiddish speaker in Wisconsin. Who knew? Thanks for the definition :)
SCOTUS has just agreed that the parties can make up their own rules. (Suit brought by a candidate for judge in NY State.)
Nice map. Note ZERO riots in media-maligned Alabama & SC, and the predominance of riots in the ‘civilized’ elitist liberal-ruled areas.
You refer of course, to the contents of the long suppressed Barret Report.
As Dan Rostenkowski, my one time congressman and chair of the ways and means committee until his conviction and removal after the house banking scandal, said (I pause for breath) “The tax code exists to reward your friends and punish your enemies.”
I’m rooting for Hillary.
Obama is more suited to be POTUS of Sweden.
Al Sharpton is gonna bite you, Hilly.
The Clintons will decide the nomination. The superdelegates will be an important part of the methods used.
That is very much to be hoped for.
No .... their moronic so called leadership will still call them to supprort their masters. They have done so for 50 years.
Like McLame loudmouth supporters here ... blind leading blind!!
Their anger over being disenfranfhised will be channeled against white businesses (and black and arab...) and Republicans, no matter how egregious the betrayal by the Democrat Party.Actually, how can it be “betrayal?” It is really S.O.P.
“On the good side, this aint gonna sit well with the rank and file RATs. Maybe the RATs are going to bleed out a significant portion of their base like Pubbies are doing now.”
You haven’t read the script that came out of Hollywood.
The Clintons are going to steal this from Obama then they are going to steal Ohio from McCain. Watch where the lawyers go. That’s how you know what state Hillary is going to steal.
If the MSM had any cajones, they should start running all the Hillary stuff now to kill put the stake through the Clinton Machines heart.
It is still a few months until the convention. It may turn out that Hussein’s use-by date is sooner than that. The Clintons will remove the out-of-date goods from the shelf.
I can’t see Hussein making it to the convention if he seriously looks like a winner in the delegate count. I suspect he won’t survive unless he makes a deal with the Clintons to have them as his VP in which case he will live a little longer.
I’m not sure I believe it but a buddy of mine insist that Klinton STILL has something on Obama and is waiting for the right moment to release the news. He says it will involve a woman. Guess we have to wait and see .
......A real mobster......
I thought he was a union thug. That might be too fine a distinction as union thugs are often mobsters
What ever, he was foolish to let the cat out of the bag.
You are correct ... to think that McCain will win is to journey into political fantasia.
It is a most sad state of our Republic, but the cold hard fact will be evident soon that the next President of the US will be Mr. Barack Hussein Obama.
From a purely legalistic point of view, I suggest that the Clinton adviser who so boldly declared that an Obama victory would be irrelevant, read the 19th amendment.
It provided for (Forgive me as this is not intended to be sexist in any way ... merely legal!) degenderization of the right to vote, and political standards have been set for women to serve in political office, with one caveat: that being the office of President. If Mrs. Clinton wins the nomination, the Supreme Court will be forced to visit the matter, and the Congress will have to provide an amendment to the amendment to allow a woman the right to hold the position of President, else a violation of the Constitution will have presented itself.
Apparently the Clinton legal advisors have not thought that far ahead ... if anything is irrelevant/moot, it is the campaign of Mrs. Clinton, and the attempt by herself and her husband to once again control the American political scene.
Looks like the media have stolen the language here. "Super" means they represent 1300 citizen votes, as a freeper has pointed out. "Automatic" makes it sound incontestable. How about "unpledged," to go with "pledged"?
