I dunno about this whole idea that anyone who is Muslim is the enemy. I don't agree with their religion, but I've worked extensively in the Middle East, and I don't find them to be hostile people. Quite the opposite. They are usually quite accomodating.

USA has many allies in the Muslim world..... Jordan, Kuwait, UAE, Qatar, Yemen, and as much as many of you don't want to admit it, Saudi Arabia.

What does bother me about Islam is the subjugation of women and the institution of Sharia law. Laws should not be based on religious text.

Moreover, I don't think women should be draped from head to toe. I like seeing women in miniskirts. However, if you travel to Dubai, Kuwait, Amman, or Cairo,(just to name a few) you will see exactly that.

So I do not belive that we are, or should be, at war with Islam. I do believe that we should be at war with terrorism. That's a whole 'nuther post though.

I went to Urumchi in 1987. It looked absolutely nothing like the photos you’ve posted. Amazing!

Urumqi (it’s usual Pinyin spelling) is a beautiful, wonderful city. It has a strong Mongolian flavor but still Chinese. Right up against the mountains.

There isn’t really a radical islam problem in China; they know how to handle that kind of thing. Religions are allowed in China - you see mosques, synagogues, churches, and temples. And it has the largest mosque in all of China!

This is the province formerly transliterated as Sinkiang, correct? The first major trading country west of China on the Old Silk Road?

This raises an odd question I wondered about for a long time.

Except for religion of course, are there inherently compatible bonds between Islam and Communism not present between Christianity and Communism?

Reasons I ask: Many of the Middle East nations that had strong ties with the former USSR had strong socialist elements. Also, many of the old Soviet Republics were predominately Muslim.

It is advanced because the CHICOMS do not allow the Sharia Law to rule this Muslim society.

There is strict separation of Mosque and State.

Otherwise this city would be a typical Third World Sewer as is so much of the Islamic Middle East and Asia.

There is a lesson here for the USA....

Well there are also millions of Muslims in the USA as well.

It looks as though the Muslims in China have been more westernized than some of those in the USA.

I traveled through China and it looks to me that Urumchi offers more to its citizens than Bejing as far as freedom and clean air and friendly faces.

It does look like Denver, Colorado. Unfortunately, if these “Chinese” get too progressive I can see the Chinese Communist Party coming down on them faster than you can say MAO.

JMHO.

Urumqi (pictured above) is a CHINESE city (majority Han Chinese), not muslim. It’s an oasis admist the muslim cesspool.

And just think what would have happened in the history of the world had the fat Friar the Pope sent along with Marco Polo and his uncles actually made it to Ghengis Khan, as the Khan requested, and converted him to Christianity?

I think the Friar chickened out on the trip somewhere in Eastern Turkey.
