About 17,000 upstate New York child care providers voted Friday to form a union represented by the Civil Service Employees Association.
The workers voted to join Child Care Providers Together, bringing the total of unionized child care providers represented by CSEA in New York to 25,000.
In May 2007, Gov. Eliot Spitzer signed an executive order granting home-based family child care providers the right to union representation. The order created four bargaining units: two in New York City and two covering the rest of the state.
The United Federation of Teachers represents child care providers in New York City and CSEA represents the two upstate units.
By unionizing, the providers gain the right to negotiate with the Office of Children and Family Services on issues such as more efficient delivery of county child care funding, improving rates and on-time delivery of payments.
Note a few things: 1) this was passed by edict of Eliot Spitzer, 2) some of these union babysitters downstate are joining teacher's unions.

Next, liberal left (aka progressive) bloggers will unionize: Sit in Mom’s basement all day & night ranting about Rush Limbaugh, “FReeptards”, Dick Cheney and those killer Marines at union wages!

Just Eliot creating more political monopolies for Dems in NY State - can’t get votes from illegals yet (though he tried!) so got to keep on with the union thing. Last one out of NY please turn out the lights....
So. What happens when moms finally decide daycare is too expensive and they start staying home? How about single moms who can no longer afford it? Who picks up the tab for them? What about fathers who must pay part of daycare costs as child support?
Most of these babysitters are self-employed. Thus, they set their own rates.
The issue here appears to be unionizing so that they can get more government money.
Who would pay the bloggers’ union wages?
Not another government union. Just another opportunity to shake down the taxpayer and pay homage to the local enabling rats. These home care workers are independent contractors. It is an anti trust violation to allow them to collude in setting rates.
In-home care by teenagers will give way to licensed and unionized child-care collectives. The state and the unions both get their cut, of course.
Kind of what I was thinking... besides, isn’t this something that would require a law in the first place?
