NBC apologises for Jane Fonda's offensive word
Fri Feb 15, 2008 12:38am GMT
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Television network NBC apologized for itself and actress Jane Fonda on Thursday after she used an offensive word on the "Today Show."
NBC called it "a slip" and said they did not mean to offend audiences.
Fonda was on the program on Thursday with playwright Eve Ensler to discuss Ensler's award-winning work, "The Vagina Monologues," in which women talk about their sexuality using frank language about their bodies and references to genitalia.
"Vagina Monologues" has spawned a movement called V-Day that aims to stop violence against women, and it is celebrating its 10th anniversary on Thursday.
Over the years, celebrities including Oprah Winfrey, Salma Hayek, Sally Field, Glenn Close and Fonda have become involved in V-Day. On the "Today Show," Fonda explained how she first heard of "Vagina Monologues."
"I was asked to do a monologue called 'C***,' and I said, 'I don't think so. I've got enough problems," Fonda said. "Then I came to New York to see Eve and it changed my life."
The "Today Show" airs live on the U.S. East Coast, and the word was not muted or bleeped. Moments later program host Meredith Vieira apologized to audiences.
"Jane Fonda inadvertently said a word from the play that you don't say on television. It was a slip and obviously she apologizes and so do we," Vieira said. "We would do nothing to offend the audience, so please accept that apology."
U.S. broadcast standards and practices bar the use of the word uttered by Fonda.
I’m sure she didn’t realize she was on TV.
The whole thing was offensive to watch. Her use of that particular term was nothing more than a logical extension of thought under the circumstances.
These people are inherently offensive, their thought processes are inherently offensive, thus what comes out of their mouths is the same. What else can we really expect from them?
Most of these old 60’s war protesters are living 40 years behind time and still believing their screwed up, pot induced ideas are relevant to todays United States.
I’m sure Fonda will come out any day now with her own heartfelt apology.
Jane Fonda is dead. I don’t know who this c&^t was on Baba Wawa’s Code Pinko Show.
Here in Eugene, Oregon we live downstream from Jane Fonda’s sewer. Our mayor Kitty Piercy played a part in the Vagina Monologues at the University of Oregon, but was unable to find time in her schedule to attend any Veteran’s Day memorial events the next November.
So when do we hear it?
One could hope....I don’t watch such shows. They are bad for your brain, don’t you know that?
I’ve never seen it. I may have to stop watching BOR if he doesn’t stop airing clips from it.
Well clips are ok...I just would love to see Rosie & Hanoi Jane together living on an island where we never have to hear from them again.....
LOL.
I listened to Rush today, Reuters ascribes her comments as described in the aforementioned report as factuous I have not read the transcipt, but, according to El Rushbo, there is some reference to “being from Georgia.”
Text without context is pretext.
Yes, Vain Fonda is nucking futs cnut.
You can’t say “Communist” on TV, that would really get you in trouble.
Hanoi Jane does it again.
All the more reason to boycott anythign she does.
I still think she should be tried for treason.
When will the FCC come down on her ?
“We would do nothing to offend the audience”
Then why have Jane Fonda promoting The Vagina Monologues?
Jane Fonda should have been hanged for Treason by The Constitution for her “aid and comfort” to the then enemy in Hanoi, Vietnam...as should the likes of Nancy Pelosi and Rick Warren today for their trips to Syria, whose government participates in deaths and injuries to US Armed Forces in Iraq.
Nice turn of a phrase.
Good job.
Lie of the day.
