Ronald Reagan Would Back McCain

By Michael Reagan

Thursday, February 14, 2008

In 1976 the Ford vs. Reagan campaign for the Republican presidential nomination got so heated it looked as if my father and Jerry Ford would never again talk to one another.

When it was over and Ford had won, what did Ronald Reagan do? He simply went all-out to help Ford win his re-election, as did I and as did my sister Maureen. My dad simply followed his rule of backing the Republican candidate no matter who he was.

Assuming that John McCain will be the Republican nominee, you can bet my father would be itching to get out on the campaign trail working to elect him even if he disagreed with him on a number of issues.

Unlike my father, a lot of conservatives stayed home in 1976, and we got four years of Jimmy Carter, whose main legacy was to drive the Shah of Iran from power and create the Islamic Republic of Iran with a bunch of wild-eyed mullahs running the show. He also gave us 20 percent inflation and long, long lines at the gas pumps. And don't forget 440 days of Americans held hostage by the mullahs.

By staying home those conservatives made possible the future election of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

We are still suffering from the legacy of James Earl Carter, thanks to the conservatives who refused to follow Ronald Reagan's example and instead sulked at home while the nation was being handed over to the worst president in American history.

We were still in the middle of the Cold War in those days, and by staying home conservatives risked losing that war by allowing an incompetent leader to become commander in chief.

Four years later Ronald Reagan took over, the hostages were immediately released, and he went on to win the Cold War. Now we have another world-wide war going on with a hidden enemy sworn to kill us all, and the policy of the Democrats running for the presidency is to throw up their hands and withdraw from the battlefield, leaving it to the enemy -- and our fate in the hands of Osama bin Laden.

Is that what the let's-stay-home-on-election-day conservatives want? Do they want the most liberal member of the U.S. Senate, Barack Obama, as their president? Do they want the pseudo-Marist Barack Obama -- who reportedly has a photo of the murderous Castroite thug Che Guevara hanging in his Houston, Texas campaign headquarters -- hanging that photo in the Oval Office?

Do they want Hillary Clinton, the duplicitous former first lady, back in the White House enjoying all those furnishings she and her husband tried to swipe from the mansion?

Do they want a Democrat spending even more money that the government doesn't have on scores of programs right out of Karl Marx's playbook?

That's exactly what they'll get if they sit out the election and stay home on Election Day. That's called biting off your nose to spite your face. Or even more to the point, political suicide.

Let me say this. There has been plenty of battling in the primaries, and I've been in the middle of the battle, but until now haven't committed myself to any candidate, waiting until we had a nominee.

That's over.

If John McCain is the nominee of the party, this Reagan will happily campaign with him. The alternative is unthinkable to anyone who loves this nation.

An R loss here will mean decades of ruin, because there IS no Ronald Reagan on the horizon. The DEMS sh!t a JFK surrogate in 4 years, we don’t work that way.

Exactly right. The right does not have the MSM to work tirelessly with Goebells propaganda, turning vapid, empty losers such as Jimmy Carter or Barack Obama into the next great leader.

How can anyone think this war doesn't matter? How long would it take for us to overcome the socialist agendas of a Hillary Clinton or a Barak Obama? These people are VASTLY more ambitious than Jimmy Carter ever was. They don't give a damn about your welfare.

Many DELUSIONAL WONDERS here think that by magic, all of the communist programs implemented by either one of the current RAT communists will just disappear in 2012, when in fact, once programs get enacted, it takes an act of God to undo them.

Your inability to see any difference between Ford and Carter reveals your extremism. Carter’s impact on our country is being felt today via Iran.

McNut kool-aid drinkers are so desperate. The sad thing is that they do not realize they have already lost the election. Sorry no real conservative would ever vote for a like McNut. The only way to save this party is to destroy it, and rebuild it. Promise you McNut will NEVER get my vote. If the Republican party wants to give Conservatives the middle finger, well guess what???? I will do the same.

Holding to principle doesn't make one a "crazy uncle." I remain true to my principles and still support the candidate most in line with my values even though that candidate differs from me on a number of issues.

OTOH, declaring to the world that you are going to sit out an election, saying that you would willingly allow a Marxist to become POTUS and conceding that you are willing to risk defeat in the GWoT because a party candidate is not conservative enough is behavior consistent with a "crazy uncle."

The demographics of this country are changing rapidly, thanks to our pro-population growth immigration policies and unsecured borders. Since 1996, the population of this country has increased 41 million from 262 million in 1995 to 303 million today. Demographics have and will continue to have a major impact on voting patterns in this country. The Dems will benefit most from these changes.

More than likely, the Dems will win big in 2008. Not because conservatives are staying home or at least not voting for the top of the ticket, but rather, because the larger Dem base is far more energized, as was the case in 2006. Certainly having a candidate like McCain will depress the GOP base [what party nominates its maverick as its standard bearer?], but I doubt if any Rep could have won this year. The only glimmer of hope is that the Dems nominate Hillary who has very high negatives. She is the only candidate who can energize the GOP base.

Dole was also running against an incumbent president with high approval ratings and a booming economy (thanks in large part to a Republican Congress that got re-elected that year). Everybody knew before the primaries even started in 1996 that the Republican nominee would have no chance. If a candidate as weak as Dole can win nineteen states and get 41% of the popular vote under the circumstances, McCain should do better than that.

Absolutely. Somehow conservatives have made Hillary, and particularly Obama, into these general election giants. I don't believe either of them are in the same league as billy jeff. The way that billy jeff co-opted Newt's agenda and claimed it for himself was politically brilliant. Clinton was moderate enough in his politics that he was somewhat believable in claiming his support of conservative ideas.

Rove said “F@ck the conservatives; where will they go?!”

Obviously, no one “forced” anyone, but the primary system and GOP machinery and pundits were intentionally geared by Rove and his fellow travelers to favor RINOs.

Nine months is an eternity in the world of politics. Potential catalysts in favor or against are too numerous to list. Our goal as Conservatives must begin at the grassroots level ASAP.

Aside from that, relax, keep your powder dry and enjoy watching the Dims rip *their* party apart. It IS happening and the scream of Dean is about to be heard....once again!

lol

Regardless, I will not be voting for McCain under any circumstance. If John McCain can vote on the basis of principle and conscience over party, so can I.

That is certainly your right.

I refuse to turn our armed forces over to Socialists.

However, I’m certain that we BOTH agree we need to take responsibility for locating, recruiting and supporting candidates of OUR choice in the future!

I just can't be complicit in the destruction of the country by voting for someone who supports amnesty, which will be the end of this country as we know it. It is a matter of principle.

I agree the primary process needs to be revised. Get rid of winner take all voting, don’t compress the primary schedule, and restrict primary voting to registered Reps. If we do that, we will have a party nominee who will have the support of most of our party. Prior to Tuesday’s voting, McCain had won only 31% of the total primary vote and had become the “presumptive” nominee of the party.

What party is stupid enough to nominate its maverick as the standard bearer? Answer: the GOP. McCain gamed the system and won. We will pay for it in November.

No, the crazy uncle is the one pulling their hair out because the election of Hillary or Obama will mean the sky falls, the crust of the earth will break open spewing forth choking gases and flaming hot lava, asteroids will suddenly pommel our greatest population centres, and all life on this earth will disappear in a giant swish of the Hildabeast's pantsuit.

On the other hand, those of us with foresight can easily see a redux of 1994 coming if BHO or HRC get elected. Two years of extremely liberal garbage, reminding the American people of why they elect Republicans. That gives us two years to show why we are deserving of getting a do-over.

you probably won’t have to decide between a Republican and Hillary, because it is starting to look like Obama is likely to be the candidate.

He is better then Hillary or Obama when at least it comes to National Defense.

National defense don't matter compared to "conservative principles".

By staying home those conservatives made possible the future election of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

What's that got to do with anything? That's nothing compared to "conservative principles". McCain doesn't have enough. Does he think conservatives are stupid or something?

What is that supposed Republican controlled Congress that you think is guaranteed going to do after Iraq is lost? Order Obama/Hillary to reinvade? How are they going to reverse whatever bizarre legislation passed by then? Remember anything they do to repeal it can be vetoed and fillibustered in the Senate. Then there’s the judges that they appoint that will be there for decades. Is having a Republican Congress the only thing that matters? Is that what you live for?
