Global warming blamed for unusual cold spell

As Hong Kong shivers through its second-longest cold spell since 1885, scientists point to global warming to explain the abnormal cold weather phenomenon worldwide.

"We are seeing extremely unusual weather across the world," said polar researcher Rebecca Lee Lok-sze.

Please, point out any fact or piece of information that the AGW skeptics have stated (as a fact, not a caustic opinion of those socialists who are demanding the death of millions) that is incorrect.

On the other hand - other than a 1/2 of one degree warming trend (that stopped in 1998) - what FACT has ANY AGW extremist ever said that is correct?

We know carbon traps heat. We know carbon parts per million have increased 40%. We know ocean and land temperatures are increasing. As Chief Justice Roberts stated in Mass. v. EPA, there are lots of questions about climate change which warrant further study. I get frustrated by the Al Gore “the debate is over crowd” but the “there is no need to even study this issue crowd” is the opposite side of the same dull penny.

Hey melstew,

If you haven’t been over to this thread, wade in and give an opinion if you would: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1969680/posts

Funny how the sun can’t be to blame for this cold snap when it pretty much obviously is.

Carbon shmarbon.

Generally understood, but rarely publicized is the fact that 95% of the greenhouse effect is due solely to natural water vapor. Of the remaining 5%, only 0.2% to 0.3% of the greenhouse effect (depending on whose numbers you use) is due to emissions of carbon dioxide and other gases from human sources. If we are in fact in a global warming crisis, even the most aggressive and costly proposals for limiting industrial carbon dioxide emissions would have an undetectable effect on global climate. However, significant efforts to limit the emission of greenhouse gases in the United States are currently underway.

I got the memo... it’s not global warming anymore... it’s “Climate Change”. Didn’t these reporters get this very important memo?

I could give you a 100 pieces of misinformation from “skeptics” (by the way, much skepticism is valid), or several from this thread—but I need look no further than your post. Since the 1880’s global temperatures have increased 3 times the rate you cite (or twice that rate if you are an internationalist using celsius). As to valid points by the “extremists”—see my earlier post re CO2.

I’m hoping the scientists who theorize the sun is the ultimate cause are correct. I saw yesterday where they were saying we’re on the cusp of a sun-caused cooling cycle. Just imagine if that panned out. The Left is so invested in GW in such a high-profile way. If it turned out to be bunk they’d never live it down. It would be another spectacular leftist Bad Idea, on the order of communism.

I agree that the issue is extremely complex. It is largely the GW crowd that dismisses the opposition. The GW crowd wants to turn society on its head. I have no confidence that global climate can be predicted 100 years in advance. Nor do I think that draconian changes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions will change the global climate. The burden of proof is on the GW crowd, not the opposition. Attempting to control greenhouse gas emissions will be extremely costly. The costs can be much more reliably predicted that the impact of greenhouse gase emissions. It is a huge, arrogant leap of faith to think that man can control the global climate.

The prudent action is to focus on problems understood with more certainty. The developing world needs to control pollution, not CO2 emissions. The developing world is choking on its air and water pollution, not CO2 emissions.

Water vapor constitutes between a third to two thirds of GHGs. The precise role of water vapor, and whether it will be critical in either a positive or negative feedback loop is unknown. If more heat leads to more vapor as a majority of scientists postulate, that could cause a tipping point. Nobody really knows. We can study the possible problem, or bury our heads in the sand and say silly things like “Carbon Schmarbon.” I prefer the former.

Fairness requires us to examine our own biases, not just the biases of liberal hacks like Gore.

I hope you get off easy if and when you're accused by the Gorebull Inquisition as a climate change "denier." But I see from your other posts that's not likely. When you find a way for humans to reverse the "global warming" that's been underway for around 14,000 years in this Interglacial, please let me be among the first to learn of it!

Next time they bring that up point them at:

http://www.worldclimatereport.com/index.php/2007/02/27/global-hurricane-intensity-not-increasing/

Which shows that global hurricane rates are not in fact increasing.

You might also want to point out that some GCMs predict that if GW occurs, the number and intensity of hurricanes will decrease...
