Students steamed at Stanford
San Jose Mercury News ^ | 2/14/08 | Lisa M. Krieger

How do you get 6,000 college students whipped up into a lather?

Here's one way: Secretly install low-flow, eco-shower heads in their dorms over winter break.

The slow drip has triggered a deluge of complaints in bathrooms all over Stanford University. But a compromise may be ending the water wars.

Officials now promise to retrofit hundreds of showers with politically incorrect, higher-pressure nozzles.

With a fury normally reserved for the University of California-Berkeley, students complained in an e-mail petition, a letter-writing campaign, a newspaper editorial and meetings with Stanford officials.

"It is like showering under a sink faucet," said Christian Tom, a junior whose pro-pressure petition in the West Lagunita dorm garnered 50 signatures in just one day. "Are we hunger striking? Of course not. But it's annoying."

The debate spread to the Internet, revealing ideological splits.

Leftists accused the school of profiteering - "it's just a good excuse to save a few bucks" - and demanded a break on their room costs. A conservative blamed the idea on "some vegan freak who should move to Russia rather than pollute American soil with his communist ideas."

One stressed-out student worried about time management: "This translates into more time spent in the shower. Does everyone really have all those extra minutes?"

Another wondered: "In another few years, will there be a mandatory 'lights out' hour?"

"People really care about their showers," said "shower beat" reporter Nikhil Joshi, 17, who wrote three stories on the brouhaha for the Stanford Daily. "We've got hard-charging students and they're pretty intellectually sophisticated, used to doing what they can to be heard."

More liberal hypocrisy on display. The little libs at the ultimate bastion of liberalism (except maybe for UC Berkeley, Harvard and Yale) are battling the very same rules that have been imposed on the rest of us by previous generations of liberal twits who wrote government regs. They always know what's best for the rest of us, but don't want to abide by the same rules themselves.

And for the one wondering about mandatory lights-out hour -- obviously you haven't been following the AGW debates. First we will have mandatory switching of our light bulbs, and, when that doesn't effect enough change, we will have mandatory "carbon rationing." Which is another way of saying mandatory "lights out." Only across the entire country, not just at the university. Get ready, young lib, to live in the new world of limited and rationed energy being created by your classmates.

This is a good EKG report for the heartbeat of liberty in America. Celebrate it.

The students should protest by leaving the showheads running after they leave. Use more water than before the ‘eco friendly’ shower heads were installed.

QUESTION:

How big a disconnect can you have before a leftist sees it?

How unenterprising.

Take the bad showerheads and pawn them, or put them on Craigslist, then buy the ones you want.

In the less expensive hotels I have stayed at, the kind with the shower down the hall, the shower heads were always gone. The manager said that they were stolen on a regular basis. hard to imagine a market for hot shower heads, but there it is.

I bought these shower heads at Home Depot that blast the water out but use less of it due to the smaller holes. It even touts a “Navy Shower” button that you can push when you’re lathering up. I sometimes have to clean the mineral deposits out but I love them.

Well, they’re at least bathing; more than you can say for their hippie parents and grandparents!

There is even a market for stolen toilets - the oldfashioned 'full flush' variety.

The low-flows will drive you crazy if you have a big family!

A student with a drill and maybe a pipe wrench should fix the problem without the university having to spend a year to fix the problem.

One stressed-out student worried about time management: "This translates into more time spent in the shower. Does everyone really have all those extra minutes?"

More than time manangement, do the longer shower times counteract the water savings. Much like having a 1.6 gallon toilet requiring two flushes to get the job done compared to the "Wasteful" 3.5 gallon one.

I’ve got some Black Market showers heads. This one is only supposed to be used on elephants.

They could offset their increased usage by making the students at U of AZ and UNLV use the water saving heads. After all, CA is entitled to almost all the water west of the Continental Divide, right?

I have a friend who went to Canada to buy one of those old school toilets with more water that you can no longer buy in the states.

Stanford? I thought they were supposed to be smart. How hard is it to go down and buy a $5 shower head. I used to work on the road and my Shower Massage was the first thing I packed. Especially in southern Cal. They had water restrictions almost everywhere I stayed.

"Listen, we care about the environment. We've often said that water conservation is a good thing. But -- you have to realize -- when we said that, we meant that people in other states ought to be conserving water. Sheesh!"

Conserve water. Shower with a friend.

My liberal boss just replaced his old 3.5 gallon toilets with new ones because of a wife directed bathroom remodeling. He was glad the plumber agreed to dispose of the old toilets for free and I laughed at him saying "he's probably getting at least a couple hundred bucks a piece for them on the black market".

How is lower water pressure saving water when you have to shower 10 extra minutes to rinse?

Navy shower my ass.

Us old diesel sub sailors used to shower with salt water then quickly rinse with fresh water...anything else was called a 'Hollywood' shower.

BTW, we had 'salt water'soap too.
