AMMAN (Zawya Dow Jones) - The Iraqi Transport Ministry will soon sign a contract with Boeing Co. worth $6 billion to buy 40 aircraft in what appears to be a step to facilitate increasing traffic to and from Iraq, the official al-Sabaah newspaper reported Thursday. "The ministry will sign in the nearest future a contract with the U.S. Boeing Co. to purchase 40 aircraft of different sizes to be added to the Iraqi Airways fleet," the paper quoted deputy transport minister, Bankin Rikani, as saying.
The national carrier will receive the new planes in 2013 and 2014, he said.
The Iraqi Airways is planning to open new routes between Baghdad and world capitals such as London, Frankfort, Manama, and Karachi, he added.

Ha! Boeing, not Airbus! Go Boeing!
Very cool.
Yay! Go, Iraq !!!
I’m guessing that’s a current pic of the airport by the flag on the aircraft’s tail?
I would suggest that they get paid up front.
I’m sure that some of the posters will say that Boeing should not sell these planes to the Iranians, but that would be a pointless move. Boeing doesn’t control where its airplanes go after it sells them. If the Iranians did not buy them from Boeing, they could easily buy them from someone else.
The photo has to be current because it’s the “Baghdad international airport”. Before 2003 it was the “Saddam Hussein International Airport”.
Iraq, not Iran.
No more of those scary Iraqi Airways planes?
The current ones always seem to be held together with duct tape.
I knew it, I knew it wasn’t Halliburton. /s
It was the Russian planes and pilots with vodka on their breath that always concerned me!
Da, other tire is in cargo. See?
It's current. That's pretty much what it looks like now.
It's come a long way since I first landed there in January 2004.
It was a war zone airport then - didn't even have electricity. Now, it's bustling and has lots of shops and restaurants.
Oh, yes... read it too quickly.
And the tires with the cords showing.
I take Gryphon Air via Kuwait these days. Much safer.
Didn’t see the name of the airport on the terminal there but I recognize the new Iraqi flag on the aircraft.
Who and what is Gryphon Airways?
Iraqi Airways expects a booming business.
Hey, if the Feds can go so far as to buy up securities to keep the economic numbers looking rosy afloat here in the USA, then they can subsidize Boeing with a few phony "sales" like this. It's the American Way. ;)
