Poodles are groomed and clipped that way for, believe it or not, greater buoyancy protection of their joints when retrieving wildfowl from cold water.

Poodles were bred by German nobility centuries ago for duck hunting, and there are standard Poodle breeders in this country today that only breed gun dogs, and not bench bred dogs for the show ring. Because they are very intelligent and people oriented, the smaller ones became the favorites of ladies.

Call me when they finally recognize the king of all dogs: The English Mastiff.

Working dogs, real dogs, get the shaft. A beagle qualifies though, so at least it is a start.

No poodle ever went duck hunting in that "outfit."

A dog might be a better presidential candidate than what we have to choose from.

I'd vote for Uno.

(Just look at that little face.)

That’s why I was so surprised to see Weim even win the group, they usually don’t make it into top four in the sporting group, another reason is often due to their temperament.

Was very glad to see German shorthaired pointer “Carlee” win Best in Show in 2005, one of the most beautiful winners of all time, in my opinion. http://www.westminsterkennelclub.org/2005/results/bis/

Aussie had puppies recently, so it must have been difficult for her.

I agree, BIS count was huge!

Find Gun Dogs Magazine. Read it and weep. They are in it, poofs and all!

Nah, a big ole Newf won in '04. ...and '84. But yeah, that English Mastiff was a beaut tonight. Looked around 230 lbs., and moved nicely for its size.

>That Aussie was good, too, but it’s hard to tell beyond movement, because of all that hair.<

That’s why the judge does a hands-on examination. If a dog moves as it should, its structure is correct. Breed characteristics should be apparent to a person who knows what makes a correct individual of a given breed.Aussie.

LOVED the 2007 winner, James. But I’m prejudiced in favor of Springers. Mine is two-and-a-half years old, and a terror to our backyard’s squirrels.

For some reason their coloration reminds me of several vegetarians I know: there seems to be something essential missing.

I pass!

I've had some good poodle "friends" but they knew they were dogs and had cute cuts.

I feel sorry for any puppy who has to go through the process of looking like that! It borders on inhumane treatment! It must take hours!!!!

Poodles are also being used now as guide dogs for the blind who are allergic to dog hair, because they are generally hypo-allergenic or allergen-free and don’t shed. Of course, they don’t cut them like the show or gun dogs.

There is a choice - they come in fawn / “silver” (most typical), gray and “blue” which is really very dark gray or chocolate color. “Blue” is not recognized (yet!) by AKA as accepted and eligible for competition, but they are quite beautiful and have no recessive genes like e.g. some albinos.

When I was a little girl a Weimeraner lived next door to my cousins. Every time I saw it, they told me it was an evil dog and bit everyone. I think because of it’s weird coloring and strange eyes I was apt to believe them.

Whenever I see one today I get the shivers, and I love dogs.

By the way, I guess I’m odd man out. I have akitas and was rooting for the Akita.
