It would be insane to waste time and energy worrying that somewhere, doubtless in a high-tech subterranean lair, Republican masterminds are cackling over their diabolical plot: The use of reverse psychology to lure unsuspecting Democrats into nominating Barack Obama, an innocent lamb who will be chewed up by the attack machine in the fall. Mwa-ha-ha-ha-ha!
Or maybe Republicans are using double super secret backward reverse psychology to exploit the Democratic Party's congenital paranoia: Let's say nice things about Obama so Democrats think we really want to run against him, and that will make them play into our hands by nominating Hillary Clinton, who so energizes the Republican base that we can actually win an election that we ought to lose. Cue another round of deranged mad-scientist laughter.
Amazingly, those are the kinds of things you hear Democrats saying out loud these days. Let me suggest that the party has enough to think about without dreaming up dilemmas.
Democratic primary voters, caucusgoers and superdelegates are right to keep electability in mind as they choose between Obama and Clinton. But Democrats shouldn't give a second thought to whether Republican strategists have some secret "agenda" in mind. No matter which candidate Democrats nominate, the Republican game plan is obvious: Go negative.
The Republican Party is saddled with an unpopular president, a long-running war and a slumping economy. In state after state, participation has been vastly greater in Democratic primaries and caucuses than on the Republican side -- an indicator not just of where enthusiasm can be found but of which way independents are leaning.
John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, should be able to capture some of those independents. But none of the fundamentals remotely suggest that this should be a Republican year.

After reading the first two paragraphs, and the tone thereof, I predict further circulation declines at WaPo. The supplied “laugh track” is just part of the problem.
Can you imagine Republicans in sufficient numbers to be stupid enough to go ga-ga over a freshman senator who hasn’t worked a real job in his life?
LOL. What exactly is our "diabolical plot"?
Nominate an unstable RINO and lose?
That's one hell of a plot.
Hillary vs. McCain would be fascinating. “Your candidate sucks even worse than mine!” The winner would have to be the first newly elected President with an under 40% approval rating.
Hey, Mr Robinson, you can bet ur ass we’ll be going negative. With targets like those, its too tempting to resist!
Oh I don't know about that -- it was more of a "heh-heh-heh" than a "cackle" at tonight's local VWRC meeting. And we self-graded our "plot" as "sneaky" rather than "diabolical" mostly because we are a Junior chapter here in Silicon Valley. We're not authorized to hatch any "diabolical" plots yet.
Like the GOP has the energy to attack any Democrat in an organized fashion when all the energy is going to in-fighting.
our country will become an ObamaNation if Obama wins.
Here’s what’s in store for us ...

“Obama is our Ronald Reagan and he is going to obliterate everything that Reaganism stood for. Yes he will raise taxes, but the wealthy will still be paying less than when Reagan took office. Yes he will increase spending on the poor, the homeless, the sick, the elderly and students, but it will still be less as a percentage of GDP than under Carter. Yes he will get us out of this silly “war on terror,” bring the troops home, slash the size of the military, and restore peace on a global basis. And if he reinstates the “fairness doctrine” and gets that conservative hate speech off the air, so much the better. Obama is going to return us to the peace and prosperity that we enjoyed under the Kennedy Administration and the nay-sayers should just get over it. Only Obama can unite the country and it is high time that it be done. My only regret is that he has not said that he will prosecute Cheney and Bush for their war crimes, for illegal wiretapping, and for gross incompetence.”
It doesn't matter who is driving ... IF WE ARE THE PASSENGERS.
And there is a difference between Republicans and Democrats like Obama, rated the #1 most liberal Senator in the US Senate.
Written by Obama supporter: "Obama is our Ronald Reagan and he is going to obliterate everything that Reaganism stood for. If the Republicans hadn’t squandered the last 8 years and had nurtured and presented a candidate with the charisma of Obama, you’re damned right their members would go ga-ga.
You got to get your radical extremists agenda through the Congress. Good luck getting those Southern and rural state Democrats to vote for it.
They have been pretty consistently voting against Peloise and Reid, what makes you think even more extremists Obama will have any better luck getting them to cut their own political throats by voting for his extremist agenda?
Our system of checks and balances works.
Yes, for our support, we Right Wings Evangelicals...
want one million dollars in the collection plate by end of sermon, Sunday!
LOL good one Bender.
The Republican Party is saddled with an unpopular president, a long-running war and a slumping economy.
Typical Dim strategy: 1) Accuse your opponent of going negative, 2) Go negative...
“Can you imagine Republicans in sufficient numbers to be stupid enough to go ga-ga over a freshman senator who hasnt worked a real job in his life?”
Democrats and their followers in the main stream media can never understand that most of us don’t get our cues from Limbaugh, Hannity, Ingram, et al. Some of us are just as sophisticated as Chris Matthews and Keith Olberman, and we don’t have masters that we have to please. We can independently figure out the best strategies for our votes, both primary and general.
Obama’s success is due mostly to the disgust with Bill and Hillary in both parties. Many republicans believe Hillary can’t win against a republicans. Some of us don’t want to roll those dice.
But that's pretty much standard operating procedure at Kos and DU.
