HUCK LIKENS MCCAIN TO FORD '76
MSNBC ^ | 2/11/08 | Matt Berger

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Huckabee suggested the Republican Party could meet the same fate as 1976 if it elected a moderate candidate who does not inspire voters.

Speaking at a press conference after addressing Thomas Road Baptist Church, Huckabee continued to compare himself to Ronald Reagan, who ran in 1976 against the party establishment, which led to a floor fight at the national convention. When reminded that the Republicans lost the 1976, Huckabee said it wasn’t because the party was divided, but because Gerald Ford did not energize the party.

“He never championed himself as a conservative, not a pro-life person for whom that was important,” Huckabee said. “He was a really nice moderate Republican, a true gentleman. But a member of Congress and more a part of the Washington Republican establishment than representing the grassroots of conservatism.”

And in a thinly veiled reference to McCain, Huckabee went on to say Republicans could lose again with a similar candidate.

“I would argue that if we do not have a candidate who can excite the base of this country, and particularly the base of our party and make them energetic and going out and getting the folks to put the yard signs in and making phone calls and traveling all over the country asking people to vote, we can lose again,” he said.

Standing with Jerry Falwell Jr., the chancellor and president of Liberty University, Huckabee acknowledged that he was surprised by his success on Saturday.

“Quite frankly we were very surprised,” Huckabee said. “And we weren't confident of anything like that kind of victory in Kansas. We felt we were doing well in Kansas and I thought we would win Kansas. I thought it would be close.”

I would like to add that one of McCain’s staff members “Warren Rudman” was critical in the selection of Justice David Souter. So says Rush Limbaugh. Rudman and John Sununu, President George H. W. Bush former Chief of staff.

The transcript of this information I recieved this from was on the Rush Limbaugh show on February 5, 2008.

This is a portion of the transcript where Rush talked about John McCain massive liberal desires to seat more liberals on the Supreme Coure even though McCain lies to us to fool us into thinking he will put Conservatives on the court just so he can win the Election.

The link to this information from rush is at the link below

http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_020508/content/01125106.guest.html

This is just a sample of what was said by Rush.

Transcript of 02/05/08 :

David Souter was nominated by President George H. W. Bush to the Supreme Court. I read this, and I said, “Gee, this I hate to have to point this out.

Who was it that suggested to then Chief of Staff John Sununu, David Souter to George Bush? It was none other than New Hampshire Senator Warren Rudman.

Who is Warren Rudman?

Warren Rudman is one of the national co-chairs of the McCain campaign.” So the guy that Senator Dole says “misled” them on the Souter nomination — and this is important to me because we’re hearing,

“Senator McCain is going to be right down the line on appointing these great judges, these constructionist judges,” and yet Dole admits in his letter to me they were misled on Souter, and the guy that misled them was Warren Rudman,

who’s a bigwig in the McCain campaign!

End of transcript.

Ford continually acted out of spite and contempt for the Republican base? I must have missed that.

Mccain has more fire than Ford did...to be fair.

and he is arguably a bit more conservative.

Ford was never remotely pro-life

McCain won’t win. A nomination for him will get us a Dem president.

McCain is nothing like Ford. Ford’s politics were not the same as mine, but I still think that the guy was a class act.

If being pro-life is the only prerequisite to be a conservative then almost every RINO in Congress is a neocon.

Huckabee is no more conservative than McCain and actually less so if you examine all their bona-fides.

And, oh, so many people think of Huckabee as a GOP McGovern — without the war record (DFC) or divinity degree (Garrett Theological Seminary)
