Roy Scheider, Actor in ‘Jaws,’ Dies at 75

Roy Scheider, a stage actor with a background in the classics who became one of the leading figures in the American film renaissance of the 1970s, died on Sunday afternoon in Little Rock, Ark. He was 75 and lived in Sag Harbor, N.Y.

Mr. Scheider had suffered from multiple myeloma for several years, and died of complications from a staph infection, his wife, Brenda Seimer, said.

Mr. Scheider’s rangy figure, gaunt face and emotional openness made him particularly appealing in everyman roles, most famously as the agonized police chief of “Jaws,” Steven Spielberg’s 1975 breakthrough hit, about a New England resort town haunted by the knowledge that a killer shark is preying on the local beaches.

Mr. Scheider conveyed an accelerated metabolism in movies like “Klute” (1971), his first major film role, in which he played a threatening pimp to Jane Fonda’s New York call girl; and in William Friedkin’s “French Connection” (also 1971), as Buddy Russo, the slightly more restrained partner to Gene Hackman’s marauding police detective, Popeye Doyle. That role earned Mr. Scheider the first of two Oscar nominations.

Born in 1932 in Orange, N.J., Mr. Scheider earned his distinctive broken nose in the New Jersey Diamond Gloves Competition. He studied at Rutgers and at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa., where he graduated as a history major with the intention of going to law school. He served three years in the United States Air Force, rising to the rank of first lieutenant. When he was discharged, he returned to Franklin and Marshall to star in a production of “Richard III.”

If you loved Jaws, you'll get a kick out of MUST LOVE JAWS (it's spoof of a promo for Jaws as a comedy/drama).

Rest In Peace Roy.

Rest in peace. I just finally saw "Marathon Man" with Dustin Hoffman and Schneider. What a dishonest play on the plot device that everything that seems true in a death scene is the opposite of what it seems to be.

I did like him though. Unlike some but similar to most, his politics (whatever they were) would not make me feel disallowed to say he was a good, intense actor.

Agreed ... Sorcerer was awesome.

I'll agree too. It was underrated, and the stunts were incredible.

Unfortunately, the DVD edition was not done well.

To me, he will always be Sal Russo in “The French Connection.”

That's it - I've gotta see that. I love Gene Hackman but now I can finally justify it with a sad memorial tinge for Schneider. And yes I've heard about the chase scene.

He was not in that movie, he was in the 2010 sequel.

That’s funny. Unintentional but the truth. “Now if we could just move that one...one step to the left...OK that’s good. Bingo.”

Is this the same guy that was in 2001 space odyssey?

No. The one you are likely thinking of is "2010 - The Year We Made Contact", released in 1984. Here are all his movie credits at imdb.

And just about every George Lucas or Steven Spielberg movie ever made.

Jaws was the only film made by either of those two that Scheider ever appeared in.

"Did you notice that his character in Marathon Man was gay? ...He was also a typical Hollyweird leftist."

Whatever! You know, the man is dead. I don't really care what his politics were. I liked him as an actor in the few things I saw him in. Prayers for his family in their time of sorrow.

“But I’m telling you, and I’m telling everybody at this table that that’s a shark! And I know what a shark looks like, because I’ve seen one up close. And you’d better do something about this one, because I don’t intend to go through that hell again!”

BLUE THUNDER!!!

I still watch that movie everytime it’s on. Haven’t seen it lately, but maybe they will play it now in memory of Roy.

I watched a bunch of shark stuff on Discovery tonight,

Roy was in a movie named Blue Thunder, he played a police
heli pilot, too bad they didn't make a Jaws based sequel.
