WASHINGTON - The day after Mitt Romney formally announced he was seeking the White House, a USA Today headline blared "Will Mormon faith hurt bid for White House?" Anchors on the major networks asked the same question and a stream of pundits predicted Romney's Mormon religion would be a significant hurdle. Almost one year later, on Thursday, Romney withdrew from the race after suffering several big losses and facing an insurmountable challenge to beat Republican rival John McCain. The degree to which his faith contributed to that defeat may never be fully known. It's clear, however, that Romney's belief in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints cost him in his presidential quest. Romney himself acknowledged that had he been a Baptist, for example, he may not have lost the Iowa caucuses - a devastating setback to his early surge strategy.

No, I rejected Romney because he has proven himself to be a big-government nanny-stater in a Republican business suit. He's never been a warrior for the limited government that upholds free principle. No, Romney applies himself as a manager. He surrendered peoples' God-given rights to discriminate in their personal and work lives against open homosexuals, when we have a God-given right to do what we must to make peopel who refuse to decline from sexual perversion to at least keep it well out of our sight, or pay a cultural price in a free society.
Romney surrendered people's God-given rights to make their own decisions with regard to health care. Employers, employees, self-employed -- the government has zero place in their relationships with health care, and Romney raised his hand high in obeisance to SURRENDRING that right. The government needs that power, you see, in order to manage things. Romney was frightening.
That, my FRiend, is why I rejected Romney. Had he shown himself to that warrior for limited government, a hawk against government intrustion, who would have DEFENDED my God-given rights in the name of Conservative Principle, I'd have supported him if he was a damned Wiccan, for Pete's sake!!!!!
Just reading the posts on this particular thread, you can see that there are some who are bigoted against Mormons.
It’s a fact - get over it and move on with your life, Romney is history.
A fuller sample? Maybe if they did a fuller fuller sample, it would have been 17% in '99, 24% in '07 and 50% in '08.
Why didn't they do a fuller fuller sample?
Whine, whine. What a load.
The truth is Mitt was a lousy candidate. If we had seen the Mitt who spoke at CPAC for the last three months he would have won. Instead we saw Mitt the Life Insurance Salesman (no knock on insurance salesmen, I used to be one :~) ). Time for the Romneyites to quit making excuses and admit the truth.
I don’t understand what you mean by that?
Another thing with Romney that rubbed people the wrong way was that people felt he came across as arrogant.
I just don’t buy the people didn’t vote for me because I’m a Mormon thing! How would Mormons feel if Romney was the candidate and they had to listen to the media in November constantly shove down their throats ... that people are being intolerant not supporting Hillary because she is a woman or Obama because he is black. Guess what ... it’s coming ... and McCain is going to have to deal with that ... and basically his campaign will be walking on eggshells in any type of criticism against whoever he will run against.
Oh, horse hockey.
The issue voters had with Romeny is he was a transparent liar who converted from a lifetime of liberalism into a conservative two weeks before running for office.
This victim card is pathetic.
Nonsense. There were about 5 people who hammered away at the Mormon thing over and over again, while the other 99% of the comments were about issues.
“the victim card” X ZACKLY!
And Republicans are going to be fuming when Obama or Hillary (and their shills in the media) do that for them in the general election. Good Luck McCain ... you are going to need it ... with the media suggests people are racists, sexists, etc. for not supporting the Democrat nominee. It is comin’!
It will be interesting to see how McCain deals with it ... when the media turns on him.
When you run into a really good salesman, you never suspect he is one because he is so good. Mitt is way too defensive, wouldn't know what "soft sell" meant if it hit him in the face.
Hang ups with the right of an infant to live and to be born, The right of little boys not to be taken out into the woods by homosexual scout leaders, the right of the people to keep and bear arms defeated Romney. Far more people care about those things - and worked to defeat him because of them. I worked tirelesly to defeat him, as I do with all liberals. The enshrining of his record on YouTube could not be explained away - just as Kerry could not escape his past misdeeds.
I totally agree. I am LDS myself, but I never liked the guy. I wouldnt say that every Mormon out there automatically signed up for him, any more then that every person who had a problem with him was anti-Mormon. I was in the military for a while and have been in the civilian work force for a while and I have never seen my religion stop me from being able to succeed. If anything held me back, it was my own lack of initiative. I have seen people who have an illogical hatred of all things Mormon. That is unfortunate, but its just an obstacle, you go around, over or through. I’ve seen a lot more people who are bigoted against races or what have you but either way, are you going to let that stop you from what you are trying to do?
The voters have to pick what is going to be their hill to die on and to me since we are talking about politics, his political stance should have been the deciding factor not this other stuff. It is pathetic that every post about Romney usually descended into this “why they are a cult” Mormon bashing from people that know literally nothing about what they are talking about, but I doubt that was the main reason he didnt do better in the primary. Usually the clowns that get hung up on that sort of thing are few in number and not in a position of any real importance, they just make a lot of noise. Romney had some really excellent points. He also had some moments of sheer liberalism and unabashed pandering that turned normal meat eating Americans off. In short he did not inspire or make me think that he would accomplish conservative goals.
I dont know or care what they do out in Utah (never been there), I live in the south and I wanted a stinking old school conservative/libertarian, not another big gov’t bureaucrat. I gave a very small contribution to Hunter and Fred, but thats it for me. Looks like I’m not getting much of a choice as MS does their primary so late.
It wasn’t Mitt’s time that’s all. Just like Reagan was cheated in 76. Now Mitt has time to show us if he is really a Conservative Convert. If he can show us he has seen the light, next time will be different.
“Hang ups with the right of an infant to live and to be born, The right of little boys not to be taken out into the woods by homosexual scout leaders, the right of the people to keep and bear arms defeated Romney.”
I completely agree. I dont see how some people could try and paint his positions on these issues as conservative.
I have also noticed that there has been almost no discussion of gun control at all in this election. Seems they are looking to slide one in under the radar. I dont think any of the remaining candidates have all that strong of a position on our right to bear arms, excepting Ron Paul. If I had to pick a single issue to vote on, it would be the right to bear arms.
“That we did understand (and reject) his religions convictions was a minus, but not a deal-killer.”
That was the point of the article.
the victim card
Oh, we’re already seeing the dems beginning to whip it out of their deck. I suspect we’ll all hear the phrase “white, anglo-saxon male” about 3000 times out of the MSM before this election’s over.
“I am not alone. In my AO the Mormons do this far more than the JWs and frankly its a pain in the ass. I KNOW people that this activity annoys, and even angers. Church-going people. People that have told the missionaries OVER AND OVER, DO NOT COME BACK.
Still they come.”
That is my biggest beef as well.
Sure...there are the difference in beliefs - but you won’t find other churches sending their young adults out to the mormon homes just so they can bash their religion.
I did find a way to get them to stop coming to MY house though.
I found the missionary boys to be very poorly informed on early church history.
I zeroed in on that and pointed out that christianity had not died out - instead there was growth despite great persecustion by the emperors.
Those same christians left behind many writings.
It’s been about 2 yrs. since they’ve come back.
I used to see them every summer.
If by this you are calling my honesty into question, I’d tell you to back off. You don't know every single Mormon and you’d be wrong to paint even the majority of them as dishonest people.
You could have tried a no soliciting sign.
