Next Up for the Democrats: Civil War (Frank Rich: Clintons destroying the party)
New York Times ^ | February 10, 2008 | FRANK RICH

Posted on 02/10/2008 6:16:27 AM PST by tlb

the Hallmark Channel.

...offered a naked preview of how nastily the Clintons will fight, whatever the collateral damage to the Democratic Party, in the endgame to come.

The campaign’s other most potent form of currency remains its thick deck of race cards.

But in the entire televised hour, there was not a single African-American questioner.

This decision was a cold, political cost-benefit calculus.

Bill Clinton and the campaign’s other surrogates stopped caring about what African-Americans thought. In an effort to scare off white voters, Mr. Obama was ghettoized as a cocaine user, “the black candidate” .

The result? Black America has largely deserted the Clintons. The campaign saw this coming and so saw no percentage in bestowing precious minutes of prime-time television on African-American queries.

That time went instead to the Hispanic population.

The question now is how much more racial friction the Clinton campaign will gin up if its Hispanic support starts to erode in Texas, whose March 4 vote it sees as its latest firewall. Clearly it will stop at little. That’s why you now hear Clinton operatives talk ever more brazenly about trying to reverse party rulings so that they can hijack 366 ghost delegates from Florida and the other rogue primary, Michigan, where Mr. Obama wasn’t even on the ballot.

Last week, Mr. Dean became sufficiently alarmed to propose brokering an “arrangement” if a clear-cut victory by one candidate hasn’t rendered the issue moot by the spring. But does anyone seriously believe that Howard Dean can deter a Clinton combine so ruthless that it risked shredding three decades of mutual affection with black America to win a primary?

A race-tinged brawl at the convention, some nine weeks before Election Day... will be a flashback to the Democratic civil war of 1968, a suicide for the party.

Very tough to edit down to usable size. Rich makes good points about the Clinton indifference to the harm they do.

Snort. Like the Toons did this on their own.

Try the Toons and their enablers, Mr. Rich. Which includes you...

Pass the popcorn - especially if obama has slightly more delegates going into the convention!

Frank Rich is shocked, SHOCKED I tell you, to suddenly have discovered that the Clintons might actually be nothing more glamorous or admirable than a pair of crazed, rabidly opportunistic backwoods-bred scumweasels. WHY, OH WHY WASN'T HE EVER TOLD ABOUT THIS, FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE -- ?!? ;)

Right! He may make some solid points, but there's no question this DBM doofus contributes to the Clinton enabling.

What's so funny is how DBM/dems/moderate/rino's are so gulible and wilfully duped by these charlatans.

The Dem’s warfare and anticipated self-destruction is almost enough to console me in my conservative depression.

The Clinton machine isn't stupid when it comes down to maneuvering the Democrat party. So what if they deserted them in the primaries. It doesn't matter. They have the black vote sewn up and they more than know it. They key demo here isn't the blacks, it's the Hispanics. They have played their political card much more intelligently. They are not loyal to either party and as a result the party establishment has to deliver for them.

Blacks are not, in large measure, going to vote for the GOP in the general election. Nor will they stay home. The Democrat machine knows all they have to do is toss a few crumbs to the old line civil rights establishment and they will get out the vote no matter who is on the ticket.

That's why Obama will not get the VP nod. It will most likely be Bill Richardson.

It's my party, and I'll cry if I want to
Cry if I want to, cry if I want to
You would cry too if it happened to you.

... and yet loses to the super-delegates. Some delegates being more equal than others.

It doesn’t matter in the end. Hillary will be the nominee, and if Obama gets to close her allies will destroy him.

With McCain as the “GOP” candidate, she will probably win.

I was right with you, all the way up that last bit, right there.

John Edwards. Because the 'Rats' electoral Achilles heel remains, as always, white southern males... and Hillary Clinton, I'm absolutely dead certain, knows that.

John Edwards. Definitely. Absolutely. ;)

If Hillary is pushed over the finish line by the Puerto Ricans or the super delegates, there will be fireworks!!

HOWEVER, the blacks and Hispanics will vote the way their LEADERS TELL them to!! These groups are nothing but SHEEP that have to be lead....sadly they don't think for themselves.

Good article, and you did a good job condensing it. I, for one, don’t remember hearing about her “town hall” event at all. And as for “who knows how many” viewers they had, that’s ridiculous. Nobody is going to pay big bucks for such a thing and not know how many viewers they got.

“Last month, two eminent African-American historians who have served in government, Mary Frances Berry (in the Carter and Clinton years)”

....Mary Frances Berry is a disgrace...the very definition of an angry black woman...a Communist and defender of Castro...her stature is based on her ability to play the race card continuously.

Would it not be ironic, if Clinton steals the nomination by convention manuevering and the result is riots in black inner cities. Black mobs attacking and burning Dem offices. It may create such a negative image that Americans may not vote for Clinton and give the election to the GOP. That would be ironic.

Clintons are suffering the same thing that McCain is suffering.
They have lost touch with reality.
For the last 8 years they have surrounded themselves with people who are akin to court jesters. They didn’t hear the truth because they didn’t want to hear it. The court jesters gave them exactly what they wanted to hear.

The first black President thought he could do no wrong. Hillary thought that she was so loved and adored and pitied that no Democrat would dare vote for a black man when a wronged white woman was in the race.

To tell you the truth, the majority of Americans are not ready for THIS candidate to the first woman president. Is it because of her gender? Yes and no. She is not particularly liked or admired by other women. Conservative women feel she doesn’t support all women. Oh she talks about women who want abortions, single working women without husbands and women who are lesbians. All other women can go pound sand. What about those supporting mothers who have given up careers to stay home with their children?
As Mark Steyn stated - Men see her as the mean Aunt, the Ex wife, or the wife who always had mean things to say about men in general and them in particular. They certainly don’t view her as someone they want to see in their living room week after week, telling them what they should do or passing judgement on men.

Hillary has spent her life being a victim. She therefore sees all women as victims too. If she was that clever, brilliant and charismatic she would have left Bill 30 years ago and went out on her own. No, people don’t want somone that sees the “little people” as members of a victim class that can’t get out of the situation without the help of the government.

My “ironic” scenario skips the violence and has Obama supporters being so outraged by Clinton cheating that they vote for McCain.
(I’m NOT a McCain fan, but the irony would be sweet enough to ease the pain.)

John Edwards. Definitely. Absolutely.

It sure didn't help John Kerry last time.

But I think we both see eye to eye in that it won't be Obama because the Dems have that demographic bought and paid for. That was my main point.
