Smoky bar triggered fatal asthma attack

A woman in her late teens died from an acute asthma attack triggered by secondhand cigarette smoke shortly after arriving at her job as a waitress in a bar in Michigan, researchers reported on Friday.

Although she had prescriptions for an assortment of drugs to prevent and treat asthma attacks, she was reported to only use them when she was having breathing difficulty.

She managed her disease badly by not taking her meds as prescribed AND got a job at a bar...Darwin award IMO.

Rosenman said the woman had asthma since age 2. Her asthma was poorly controlled. She had made four visits to her doctor in the year before her death for flare-ups, and had been treated in a hospital emergency department two to three times that year.

Sorry for the long article quote, but that’s the reason she died; not smoke, but uncontrolled asthma which could have been triggered by just about anything.

But never let the nanny state gestapo pass up a chance to use someone’s death to further their cause. I’m just surprised the smoke nazis got to her story before the free gubmint healthcare people did.

My asthma is pretty well controlled. Yet, I never go anywhere, even a short trip to the store, without my acute attack inhaler close by.

It is very expensive stuff, and I could see if money was a problem - then a person might be reluctant to go through the inhaler too quickly - developing a tendency to only take a puff when you are already in trouble.

What type of inhaler are you talking about? My older son was asthmatic and we would occasionally lose albuterol inhalers (the emergency one). A pharmacy once told me that they couldn't fill the scrip because the insurance wouldn't pay for another.

I asked how much it cost out of pocket. It was $8.50.

You don't have to be 21 to work in a bar. You have to be 18 to serve a drink, but even a 16 year old can work there bussing tables or washing dishes.

In the US, 18 year olds are legally adults in all respects with the exception of drinking.

Luckily for us, he never lost the advair because he took it every morning during his trigger times. The albuterol would get misplaced because he didn't use it very often.

The maintenance meds made a huge difference in treating his asthma! It's a shame this girl couldn't/didn't get compliant with her meds.

I so agree. The bible says if you raise your children in the ways of the Lord they will not depart from it. That doesn’t mean that you just give them book learnin’. You live the life so they see it in action as well. All that has been lost through public education which is determined to destroy that relationship.

thankfully, smoking is not allowed. i wouldn't work there if it was. nothing worse than going home reeking of smoke.

Heartless? I'm worse than heartless. this grant junkie wanted to pretend that he found the second known case of someone dying from SHS.

Besides Richard Moorehead, name one other person who has been killed by Second Hand Smoke. He is the only documented case to date.

I agree that there is a lot more to this story.The very sudden onset makes no sense.

The autopsy says she died of asthma but there is no way they can prove what brought on the attack. It could have been the cleaning solvent used in the bar,maybe someone had a scent that caused a reaction,stress can be a problem.

My attacks,all those years ago,just sort of came out of nowhere. All the allergy tests and all the medications didn’t help solve the problem. They came when they came,and the disease just went away in my early twenties. Poof,gone !

They will never blame anything but the smoking for this girl’s death. Never.

You are missing the point of my post entirely. I do not support the anti-smoking Nazis who seek to regulate every sort of private taste. I do not support the people who try to make smoke and smokers out to be the chief evil of all time.

I am, however, sympathetic to a young girl who died of asthma. No matter what tragedy occurs, there are many people on this forum who have no compassion for the deceased.

It may be difficult for you to believe, but for people who are allergic or sensitive to it, tobacco smoke can indeed trigger a severe asthma attack. So can other inhalants (oil fumes, diesel, perfumes, animal dander, pollen, etc.) There’s nothing wrong with pointing out that smoke too can trigger attacks.

Thanks Officer Doodyhead. I'm not a fat donut eater, you have me confused with somebody else. I wish you luck. After grad school you can move on to working security in a mall for $10/hour. Maybe you can mase some teenagers who light up a cigarette by Abercrombie and Fitch. That should satisfy your craving for power.
