I will speculate that this date was planned long ago, and back then everybody involved expected that the candidates would be clearly identified for both parties by now. That would mean all the candidates would be taking a few weeks to rest, catch up on the botox, detox the pantsuits, etc.

So, Fox News decided they would rather have President Bush on this "slow" weekend than Joe Biden or Lindsey Graham.

Now, by a quirk of fate and voter meddling in how the media planned this entire election cycle, both nominations are still not official. Best laid plans...

Probably because the networks want to jump on doing specials etc before the end of his term when what he said could possibly have long term influence they were not interested, that is my theory anyway.

It makes them seem fair and balanced.
